Starting with Ireland's bloody Easter Rebellion of 1916 and ending with his untimely death, this brilliantly photographed epic from director Neil Jordan tells the charged story of Michael "Mickey" Collins. An IRA founder whose innovative guerrilla tactics succeeded in bringing freedom from British rule, Collins remains a controversial but much respected political figure, who is skillfully embodied in the film by Liam Neeson. Aidan Quinn plays his longtime friend Harry, and Julia Roberts, sporting a nice brogue and lovely period costumes, is Katie, the woman they both love. Jordan staged most of the battles, riots, ceremonies, and speeches at their actual locations in Ireland with a cast of thousands and a great eye for period detail. The result is a film that is both historically evocative and stunningly beautiful thanks to the breathtaking cinematography of Chris Menges. The film is also surprisingly nonjudgmental in its depiction of Collins's appalling but inarguably successful methods of "bloody mayhem." Stephen Rea and Alan Rickman costar, with Elliot Goldenthal contributing a rich Oscar-nominated score.

Very acrate movie about the big fella
The first time i bought this I've loved it. Then me buying again when i lossed my copy so o had to get it again so glad i did ... This is 110% correct with the truth. Like near end of the movie Mic says " I'd gladly u blackin my name then to live under thr crown bs and he eas so right. The movie will teach younger generations to come what sacrfic is all about. Tk u BIG Fella. For showing the was gor freedoms The first time i bought this I've loved it. Then me buying again when i lossed my copy so o had to get it again so glad i did ... The Big Fella
Better than average bio-pic on Ireland's "Big Fella." Julia Roberts is miscast as Collins' love interest. She couldn't manage an Irish accent if her life depended upon it. An extremely complicated story is streamlined and simplified so most Americans can understand the history of this tragic and beautiful country. Far better than the average Hollywood studio film interpretation of Ireland's "troubles." Think of it as an Irish version of "Lawrence of Arabia." Better than average bio-pic on Ireland's "Big Fella." Julia Roberts is miscast as Collins' love interest. She couldn't manage an Irish accent if her life depended upon it. An extremely complicated story is streamlined and simplified so most Americans can understand the history of this tragic and beautiful country. Michael Collins - one of the best ever
A deceased relative of mine used to send Bernadette Devlin $500 a month for most of his life. I only mention this to illustrate what a pro-Free Ireland atmosphere I lived in, even in America. While neither my pocketbook, nor perhaps sentiments, extend to quite that level, you can see how easy it would've been to disappoint me. When Michael Collins first appeared in the local theatre, I stayed literally all day. Even if you have no such background, caring nothing for history or human rights, this is a great movie. Script, direction, casting/acting all superb. Way too violent for youngsters. Before you get on your high horse about that, be aware the violence is not gratuitous. Did the American colonies just send Britain a polite letter requesting independence and get a gracious ... MICHAEL COLLINS DVD, Accurate Irish History
MICHAEL COLLINS is a wonderful, historical movie about the Irish fighting for THEIR Independence. It is really an all-star cast. The movie is rare now, so snatch it up when you can find it. This movie is now out of print. I am definitely adding this to my St. Patrick's Day collection; the movie, MICHAEL COLLINS, will help explain to my grandchildren why the Irish are often referred to as the ORANGE and the GREEN. ONE TIP FOR THE BUYERS, this DVD is two-sided.... if it seems the movie is in the middle, when you begin the story--flip the DVD over and begin with the other side. The movie is too long for one side of the DVD (it IS accurately labeled, actually, if I had just paid attention and looked!!)MICHAEL COLLINS is a wonderful, historical movie about the Irish fighting for THEIR Independence. A great movie on Michael Collins and his role at the time, from 1916 to his death in August 1922. The only problem is tuning your ear to understand the heavy accents.
