A remake of the 1951 sci-fi classic of the same name, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL follows astrobiologist Helen Benson (Jennifer Connelly) as she is unceremoniously plucked from her everyday life with her stepson (Jaden Smith), and whisked away to consult the government on a top-secret matter. That matter happens to be the arrival of a massive glowing sphere in Central Park, accompanied by a towering robot-like protector dubbed Gort and an alien ambassador named Klaatu (Keanu Reeves), who takes up human form to communicate with the people of Earth. When Klaatu finds himself faced with hawkish, uncompromising officials, he goes on the run with Benson and her son as the fate of the world gradually becomes clear.<BR><BR><BT><BR><BR>Directed by Scott Derrickson (THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE), this reimagining of THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL is fairly reverent to the original film, while adding a number of 21st-century elements, most notably a darker tone embodied by a more threatening Gort and the chilly, contemplative Klaatu, who is portrayed with pitch-perfect remove by Reeves. While the film--and the fate of humanity--rests on Reeves's shoulders, the cast is impressively filled out by Connelly and Smith, along with Kathy Bates, John Cleese, and familiar TV actors Jon Hamm (MAD MEN) and Kyle Chandler (FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS). Derrickson also tempers excellent special effects with a bleak colour palette and plenty of existential turmoil, making this EARTH a thoughtful and fascinatingly moody blockbuster.

Entertaining, but only just!
I gave this 3* simply because it's not really possible to best the original! The original 1951 version was made before I was born (only a year later) but as a kid I saw it, and as a teen I saw it again... and yes, I have seen it a few times since. Whilst the original's theme was more or less followed, it somehow lacks the distinct warning message, that was intended in the post-war 1951 version of the original: "You lot really are the cretins of the universe! Stop your purile warfare and aggression now, or we'll just have to destroy you [before your aggression spreads like a destructive virus throughout the universe!" I like Keanu Reeves (he was excellent in The Matrix series and just about everything he's done... Bill & Ted included), and he played his part in this film very well... ... The original film's concept (as far as I understood it and enjoyed it) was that the heroine was able to come to terms with impending doom, and in order to avoid it, learn from the injured Klaatu the one phrase that had the only chance of saving the Earth... she must communicate with the all-powerful Gort in order to save our planet from destruction! Three words: "KLaatu barada nikto!" There have been many postulations on what these three words mean, in the 'created language' of the film. Most popular is "Heal Klaatu, do not destroy [anything]!" 3/5 stars from me, but if you want 5/5, watch the 1951 original! Gordon

earth stood still
This film is good with respect to the special effects etc. However having seen the original(starring Michael Renny) many times this new film is quite poor in comparison. If it had stuck to the original storyline it would have been an improvement. I will keep on whatching and see if my views change.

fanastic film,well worth the money, wanted this for awhile,have not compared this to other as keep enjoying this one
