Product Information
From the Ventana Wilderness, the Carmel River descends 36 miles through steep canyons into the spreading Carmel Valley. Rain-gorged in spring, it rushes to the Pacific Ocean at Carmel Bay. In summer, shallow riverbanks welcome deer, mountain lions, and waterfowl. For millennia, native tribes fished along the river, which was discovered in 1602 by Sebastian de Vizcaino. He called the waterway El Rio del Carmelo, describing it as "lined with black poplars and other trees of Castile." Ranches, dairies, and orchards thrived under Spanish, Mexican, and finally American flags. The Carmel River, like the valley it defines, has accommodated native, farmer, resident, and now the vacationer as it flows along through time. Today vineyards, tasting rooms, boutiques, and resorts decorate the rural landscape, beckoning visitors and locals alike.

Title: History of Carmel Valley brought to life in book Author: Marc Cabrera Publisher: The Herald Date: 4/23/2010 Carmel Valley's pictorial history has been brought to vivid life thanks to a new book by a local author. "Images of America: Carmel Valley" by Elizabeth Barratt and the Carmel Valley Historical Society presents 220 historical images from the valley's past, with sketches dating back to the 1700s and photos provided by local descendents of valley pioneers dating to the 1800s. The book is the latest in a series from Arcadia Publishing focusing on local history. Barratt, the historical society's archivist and former Monterey County Herald columnist, begins each chapter with a brief introduction, followed by short passages describing each image. Her husband, Richard Barratt, chairman of the historical society, helped scan and lay out the images, which were culled from the society's archives as well as local libraries. Despite their connections through the historical society, the Barratts had to search far and wide to find images that told a story of Carmel Valley's dignified history. "There is not a ton of history on Carmel Valley," said Elizabeth Barratt, who with her husband has lived in the valley for 27 years. "You have to dig, dig, dig to find stuff." The book's opening chapters cover the Valley's origins, with a brief history on the Esselen and Rumsen tribes that are believed to have inhabited the area 2000 years ago. Sketches of the Spanish mission settlers, including those by Jose Cardero made in the late 1700s, offer the earliest views of Mission Carmel. While images of the Spanish missionaries were easy to come by, Barratt said it was difficult tracking down images of the native Indians who lived on the valley prior to Spanish settlement. One rare photo depicts an early mission Indian, Old Gabriel, believed to have lived to be 151 years old. Old Gabriel was present for the arrival of Father Junipero Serra in 1771. He died March 14, 1890. Those type of finds made Barratt's work exciting. "There's more out there than people think and it's fun to play detective and uncover it," said Elizabeth Barratt. Later chapters cover the early pioneer families that settled on the land, including the Boronda, Meadows, Martin and Wolter families. Barratt managed to get in contact with descendents of the Wolter family who still live in the area. The family lent photos from their own private collection, some dating back to the 1870s. "That makes it a very personal story," Barratt said. Researching and completing the book was only the beginning for the author. Now, she gives regular slide show presentations of her work to local schools and civic groups. She sells copies of the book at each appearance. All of the proceeds go to the historical society's museum fund. Construction on the building is almost done, and the Barratts are hoping for a grand opening at the end of the year. "The building is real quality work," said Richard Barratt with a smile. "It's built to resemble a Carmel Valley Barn." For Barratt, the fundraising work continues, but the joy of her finished product remains. "That was a lot of fun writing the book," she said. "I learned how to publish my own book, so now I know what to do."
