Deluxe three disc (two CDs + PAL |Region 0 DVD) release. Includes DVD that contains 12 performances. Eva Cassidy's performance at the Blues Alley jazz club has become musical history. Twenty years on, experience for the first time every song recorded on the night of the 3rd January 1996. Nightbird is Eva Cassidy's ultimate tour-de-force - 31 songs recorded in one night at the Blues Alley jazz club in Georgetown, DC. Encompassing the full spectrum of Eva's gospel, blues, jazz and folk roots, Nightbird showcases the breadth and depth of one of the world's finest singers. The recordings have been remixed and remastered from the original tapes resulting in the most sonically engaging Eva Cassidy release to date. Of the 31 songs, 12 are previously unreleased including the title track as well as the jazz standards It Don't Mean A Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)' and 'Fever'. Of the 12 unreleased tracks, eight are previously unheard songs. These include 'Son Of A Preacher Man', 'Route 66', 'Late in The Evening', 'Baby I Love You' and 'Caravan'.

DVD alone worth the price. Double cd long, but very good
DVD is only black & white, but is worth the whole price if you can get it to work. Need PAL capability (I had with trusty Magnavox DVD player, not better Sony Bluray player) but you can output in NTSC which is what finally worked best. The DVD is a touching statement to a virtuoso artist who effortlessly goes from ballads to jazz to blues songs. It is wonderful to see her happy as she is greatly and humbly appreciative of the audience applause. It is sad knowing what is coming-- her death in 10 months, when you see and hear how amazing she was and yet was undiscovered. The blues and jazz at times just like the cd can be edgy but the ballads are a revelation. Time after Time is a beautiful rendition right within her range. But the best is clearly her wonderful version of Under the ... DVD is only black & white, but is worth the whole price if you can get it to work. Certainly the original 'Live at Blues Alley' I always thought was great, especially Stormy Monday, People Get Ready, and her amazing, better than Sting, version of Fields of Gold. I like her Bridge over Troubled Water, but it won't beat Art Garfunkle. Nor have I understood her liking Tall Trees in Georgia. But that is what is great about the original; there is something for everyone in jazz, blues, country, folk, and ballads. The most versatile singer, in my opinion, and this double cd just gives more songs especially for the fan to enjoy that could have easily been on the original.

Eva's voice is one of the most eloquent out there, and, sadly she's gone much too early. Buyers of this collection will be very pleased with her cover of Sting's 'Fields of Gold', as with every other song on the 2CD set. I was apprehensive at this being a live set, because, sometimes you get those objectionable boneheads with cat-calls and generally loud and distracted audience applause. I assure you, this crowd was very appreciative of the program, and light applause was recorded between tracks. One thing I'd stress, if you're looking forward to the 12-track accompanying DVD, be aware it's in a set from UK, hence the DVD's recorded in PAL, not NTSC, so you may have trouble playing it in some DVD/BluRay players. Great listening experience
This just might be the definitive recording, especially for those who are new to this great artist. A flawless live performance, well-recorded and delivered through the two-CD set. Then there's the bonus of the DVD! The liner notes are highly informative and beautifully written. An amazing value, but worth any cost!

Eva Cassidy - Nightbird CD
Eva Cassidy was an American Treasure (still is and will always be). I was at the Blues Alley concert and had seen Eva many times as I live in the DC area and she played at small local venues. I have to give thanks to the citizen of the UK that discovered this live Blues Alley recording and made Eva famous worldwide, many years after her tragic death to cancer. Eva Cassidy had the most beautiful voice. Songbird is a great double CD (mine included a DVD) which I recommend to everyone.Eva Cassidy was an American Treasure (still is and will always be). Eva Cassidy, night bird
The video quality of the DVD is terrible, absolutely awful. If I didn't know better I would guessed it was a video from the 50's. I've listened to the first cd and it sounds great except for the 2 or 3 songs that don't want to play, on multiple CD players. I'm a huge fan of Eva Cassidy, I would highly just recommend the other CDs that are available but not this package at all. It's really disappointing.The video quality of the DVD is terrible, absolutely awful. If I didn't know better I would guessed it was a video from the 50's.
