White Mansions?The Legend of Jesse James
My primary interest in this re-issue combination DVD was in the White Mansions portion, although it's companion was quite good, also. Years ago I ran across the White Mansion recording on vynal, and I bought it. I have been a Confederate History buff for most of my life, and I very much appreciated the approach. It was in the country vein, but it somehow pictured the exuberance the South felt at the start of the War fading to the dawning realization that they were going to loose....starting with the melancholy song "Didn't Know a Summer Could Be So Damn Cold." After the War a sense of profound melancholy settled over the South, and this recording mirrors it best. Waylon Jennings and the others need no introduction. The only recording I have heard that would br it's equal is the now out ... The only recording I have heard that would br it's equal is the now out of print The Confederacy, done by Richard Bales and the National Symphony Orchestra. It was last done on DVD, and I was fortunate enough to find a copy. But this is not about that one, which I have reviewed elsewere. If you are interested in the South, her feelings in and around the War, by all means get this one. Do yourself a favor..get it on DVD...it's cheaper than on vinyl. As a PS it is worth noting that Frank and Jesse James were both members of a rather notorious Confederate Partisans group under a man named Quantrell (sp) Sadly, they saw fit to sack and burn Lawrence, Kansas. Frank and Jesse went on to a life of crime, and Jesse was shot in the back by a fellow who called himself Mr. Howard---whose name I believe was Ford...and was widely reviled as a coward. Frank and his mom lived to a ripe old age, if memory serves me. But anyhow, do get this one, it's worth it.

White Mansions is a fantastic Rock/Country collaboration with Waylon Jennings,Jesse Colter Eric Clapton and members of the Ozark Mountain Daredevils.It tells a romantisized story of the Civil War Great music.I had this years ago and had nearly forgotten about it until I heard it again during the historical presentation at Antietam National Battlefied. Jesse James is great also if only for the Cast members:Johnnie Cash,Levon Helms from the Band,Emmylou Harris,Charlie Daniels,Rodney Crowell,Roseanne Cash,Albert Lee. It was something I had been searching 30 years for.
I love eBay. It is an amazing market. You can find most anything you need. I had been looking for this music for 30 years. The last of my search was before computers came along and I was told (probably by phone) there were no more copies being produced. I gave up my search but always looked. 30 years later, I decided to put in this music information on eBay and I found one listed. It had, "buy it now" So I did. I am as delighted as can be. I lost contact of the person who had the music so it's been a life long search for me that is finally over. I am a singer and the artist was Emmylou Harris and she sang two songs on the LP called the Legend of Jessie James. I found it on eBay in CD.I love eBay. It is an amazing market. I first discovered "White Mansions" while hitch-hiking in the Southwest. A former lead guitar player for Waylon turned me on to it. Paul Kennerly, one of the great Nashville songwrters who very few have heard of, was the creator of this outstanding work. And the contributions of Jennings, Jessi Coulter, et al. -- well, they were perfectly "cast" for the songs. I'm not as fond "Jesse James" although the music is classic western, and, of course, anytime you can listen to Johnny Cash it's worth it.
