ISBN 0590437879 – As a newly converted fan of the American Girls books, Meet Kirsten was a pleasant read for me. I do have some problems with it, but I’ll save those for last. Kirsten and her family arrive in America from Sweden in 1854. Traveling by train, steamboat and even on foot, the family faces challenges all the way to Minnesota, where they join Uncle Olav and his family. ***SPOILER ALERT*** I was very curious about how realistic the story could be without a death aboard the ... Reality returned with a death (I won’t say who) along the way across the country and I was rather surprised that they handled it well. If your child is apt to be upset by the death of a character that they identify with, please read the book before handing it over. The illustrations are average and rather bland, with one exception being the burial. The informative pages at the back, filled with historical facts, keep the book from being too much of a sell-the-dolls tool. - AnnaLovesBooks

Excellent book for 9 year old girls.
This book was bought for my grand-daughter for Christmas to go with an American Girl Kirsten Larson doll which I refurbished by using other ebay purchases. The book was new and introduces Kirsten and her pioneer family to the reader. The story content is excellent and the historical notes very informative. The original American Girl Historical Dolls and their books were an excellent educational tool for young girls to learn about American history through the different ethnic backgrounds of immigrants and historical events. I would recommend this book and similar ones as good play and educational value. A great book for all ages
I am a collector of Kirsten dolls and her clothes. I enjoy reading the stories about the Swedish immigrants and how they survived the harsh weather and living conditions of the time. It's a great book for even adults! I'm looking forward to reading the other five books about her.

A great read and learning experience
The American Girl books are excellent books for young girls to read. They give girls good positive role models. I read this book with my 6 year old daughter. It was fun to learn about what life was like for a young Swedish immigrant coming to a new land. This book tells about the End of Kirstens voyage on the boat. Her families first experience in stepping foot on American soil. Kirsten goes into town with her father and gets a little lost. She is lucky enough to find a kind American woman who helps her find her family.The American Girl books are excellent books for young girls to read. They give girls good positive role models.
