Contra 4 for the Nintendo DS is a 2D side-scrolling game produced by Konami Digital Entertainment and developed by WayForward Technologies. As the eleventh installment in the Contra series, it’s a direct sequel for the original Contra video games for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and Super NES, with a gameplay style that will feel familiar to fans of its precursors. Contra 4 had a release date of November 13, 2007 in North America and celebrated the original Contra’s 20th anniversary with high ratings. Set in 2638, the events of Contra 4 take place two years after those of Contra III: The Alien Wars, which is now available for Nintendo 3DS. The plot opens on a peaceful Earth, but a threat hovers on the horizon in the form of Black Viper, an alien entity similar to Red Falcon. The Earth Federation deploys Contra Force commandos to the Galuga archipelago in search of Black Viper, with the intent to destroy both the entity and its various minions. Bill Rizer and Lance Bean are joined by mercenaries Mad Dog and Scorpion as they battle their way across a raging landscape full of robots, mutants, and aliens. Contra 4 returns to the gameplay model of the original Contra, trading in the fixed weapon configurations of later games for the familiar power-up icons. By picking up these icons, players can get new weapons, including a grappling hook accessory that allows characters to interact with certain parts of the overhead environment. The hook is new to the Contra games and gives players more options on how they approach a given battle, whether it’s to avoid an incoming attack or move to a more strategic area. Collect multiple power-ups, and you can create new weapon versions that let you deal with a battle more effectively. The game takes advantage of the Nintendo DS setup by utilizing both screens, with the grappling hook making it possible for characters to travel from one screen to another. Several stages shift the players’ perspective to behind the character’s back, producing a look and feel reminiscent of the ’3D view’ stages available in the original Contra. In these areas, the action all takes place in the top screen, while a map of the stage and power-ups is shown on the bottom. The majority of the game is composed of the Arcade Mode, which you can play through by yourself or with a friend. There are three available difficulty levels—easy, normal, and hard—and each one has its own unique endings. Easy mode is most accessible to newcomers, but it prevents players from entering the last two stages. Normal and hard both let you play through to the end, though they have different endings once you’ve defeated the final stage. By completing the Arcade Mode, you unlock the Challenge Mode, where you can go through the stages again while fighting to complete certain tasks. Contra 4 for the Nintendo DS is a must-have for fans of the Contra games, especially those who enjoyed the original video game that started the series. It brings back the fast-paced side-scrolling action from the first Contra while introducing a variety of new content, giving fans plenty to play through as they reenter a familiar world.

    CONTRA 4! "An experience so classic it's practially coin operated!"

    As is noted within the games' menu for arcade mode, "an experience so classic it's practically coin operated". This is a very good version of Contra. It's got all the elements that you remember from the NES days, the sound is absolutely vibrant and fits the tone of the game perfectly. The graphics are absolutely beautiful, I don't think I've ever seen Contra side scroller that ever looked this good before. It's pretty cool too because you were able to swap between two weapons in your inventory at the same time. I guess you were able to do that in Contra 3, Alien Wars, though I've never played that one yet. Anyway, that element is really cool.     3000 characters left, and I'm playing a video game.

    This game is fun and hard- cough- challenging. Plus it is packed with summaries of every previous contra game and let's you play the original contra from the menu, just to remind yourself to get back on that horse and try again. You will not just run through the game like the you tube video. You must grow to enjoy dying for every inch of screen, and while not as disgusting as the ps2 versions, the levels remain inventive and -snort- well, I'm sure I'll see them some day. Graphics are worthy, if the avatars are bland you might say this iteration is still tailored to kids, despite the learning curve. Goes back to the pick up weapons system of the original instead of the revolving trio used recently, which adds to the thrill while bacrificing bome btrategy. Ever feel burveiled? PLAY ...

    One of the best

    An awesome take on a classic game! The double screen takes some getting used to but worth it for gameplay. It hails to the original Contra with classic weapons and even hints of the original soundtrack. Boss fights are hard but not impossible and it comes with "Contra Museum" which goes through the whole Contra legacy. A must have for any Nintendo DS collection. Multi-player is available but ONLY with 2 Nintendo DS / 2DS /3DS systems and 2 game cards. Lots of fun!

    The legend continues with even more hair loss

    If you remember the first Contra games from the 80's and early 90's no warning is necessary for those who don't be warned this game is highly addictive and will leave you with a lot less hair than when you started. Like its predecessors Contra 4 provides you with a real sense of accomplishment when you finish a level or complete a challenge and even though you'll curse the game more often than not you just can't put it down. I often found myself getting so frustrated I just shut the DS off only to be back 10 minutes later trying that same challenge. The story mode itself isn't very long and when you get skilled enough you could probably play through the game in under an hour. Some of the end of level bosses, Jungle and Factory spring to mind, are also a reimagining of some of the classics ...

    contra 4 for Ds

    Well what can I say if you are a fan of contra or any fast-paste sidescrolling action games this is for you. First off the gameplay well you can play as 4 different chatecters and this is the hardest contra game I played to date and I am a hard core contra fan and thats what we conttra fans like hard game s to test are limits 2 differences form the oiginal 3 games. First of all there two screens so you got to watch the gun fire on both screens. second of all you can hold to power-ups so that helps alot. Next the exrtas well you don't get to much you know, you got just the options so what, but the is a really cool extra where you can read all about the past contra games, really cool because if you don't know anything about contra you can learn the history and mabye try them out.
