I jumped on the bandwagon and bought this and have since often wondered if some of the others might have been a better buy. Yes, there are more accessories for this one, it has a cool look when it is new, the click wheel is cool, and more people are familiar with it. However, it has its drawbacks. The iTunes interface isn't very flexible for personal preferences. My files previously were stored in folders by genre, then sub-folders by artist, etc. I could then play all music of an artist, genre, etc, and shuffle the songs within those choices. The only way you can shuffle with iPod is shuffle all the songs on the iPod. You may get some 80s heavy metal song, then follow that with some bubble-gum pop song you still aren't sure why you ever saved. The only way to change this is by ... The only way to change this is by going through a very tedious task of creating playlists. One other big problem is that the iPod is very prone to scratches. The screen scratched the first day when I put it in the inside pocket in my jacket, which has a soft liner and shouldn't scratch anything. The chrome back is also cool looking, but also very prone to scratches. I would also like to see them add some equalizer type functionality to the iPod for listening preferences. The thing plays music just fine and hasn't had a functional problem yet, but I would suggest considering other options before purchasing this item.

Likes: - It can hold a lot of music - Simple, effective design - Audio quality impressive with decent headphones - Feels like it's built to last* - It actually came with an AC charger - The last of the original iPods (before the battery consuming graphical ones came about (OLED would definitely be useful in this department)) Neutrals: - A nice shockproof case would be useful to keep the hard drive working longer (a decent Solid State Disk drive would make iPod virtually indestructible) - When playing a DJ mix, it should be a smooth transition like on a CD, not a horrendous sounding skip to next track (maybe I didn't find this feature) Dislikes: - *Unfortunately it doesn't last too long (hard drive failure most common) - Very difficult, time consuming, and ... Likes: - It can hold a lot of music - Simple, effective design - Audio quality impressive with decent headphones - Feels like it's built to last* - It actually came with an AC charger - The last of the original iPods (before the battery consuming graphical ones came about (OLED would definitely be useful in this department)) Neutrals: - A nice shockproof case would be useful to keep the hard drive working longer (a decent Solid State Disk drive would make iPod virtually indestructible) - When playing a DJ mix, it should be a smooth transition like on a CD, not a horrendous sounding skip to next track (maybe I didn't find this feature) Dislikes: - *Unfortunately it doesn't last too long (hard drive failure most common) - Very difficult, time consuming, and risky to attempt to open it for self-servicing (when $99-$200 doesn't sound reasonable for repairs) - Two year Apple Care only covers you for one iPod replacement - Battery life could be much better - Battery should definitely be much easier to replace (user-replaceable?)(and not cost $99 for a professional replacement, not that it happened to me but it has happened to my friends) - iPod should be allowed to work as a fully functional hard drive by default (write to iPod and write from iPod to computer) - Overall, I wish they would simply last a little longer since it is an expensive product

I've never been too fond of ipods. They have too many problems and only seem to last about a year before you have to purchase another one. They are very quick and have a nice storage capacity buts thats it. No amazing features, too big for my taste. One thing that is very anoying which I'm sure there is a workaround for is the sync between the ipod and the computer. If you put 1,000 songs on your ipod with one computer and then plug the ipod into lets say your laptop. It has to make a new partnership and it erases all of the previous songs. You can contact apple and eventually they will reimburse you for all of the lost songs (1,000 songs at $.99 is a lot). The last thing that needs to be changed is the non user accessible battery. The Best Utility Pod
This version of the iPod is a great buy used if you just want an iTunes compatable hi-capacity digital music player. For less than what a 2GB Nano will cost you you can get 10X the storage space but you have to deal with a black and white screen, larger unit, and slow recharg times. The battery life on this iPod is decent about 5 hours, but it can take about two hours for a full recharge (the 30GB iPod Video only takes about 45 minutes). I also keep it around as a "utility" pod. I use it when cutting the grass, working in the yard or tool shed and going to the track, basicly I use it in places where my iPod Video would be more likely to be damaged.This version of the iPod is a great buy used if you just want an iTunes compatable hi-capacity digital music player.
