Product Information

Excerpt from Descendants of Edward Small of New England: And the Allied Families With Tracings of English Ancestry This work has grown far beyond the proportions originally intended; hence a few words in explanation appear to be necessary. In the beginning, the so-called "Register plan" for the arrangement and numbering of families was considered, and was discarded as not applicable. It could have been used in the later families with good effect. The material employed has been collected, as far as possible, from original sources, preserving the spelling and form. The dates, in the matter gathered personally, have been copied with no attempt to change the day from Old Style to New Style. In the published volumes consulted, and contributions from private individuals, the style of dating is not always apparent. Double-dating gives rise to much confusion. It began in New England almost with the first settlement, and continued until September, 1752. Before that time, the year began with March 25, with the result that March was the first month, and October, November, and December were the 8th, 9th, and 10th months respectively. Double-dating consists in adding to each date between January i and March 25, according to the old style, the year in the new style which would include these days. March 20, 1689-90, is definite; whereas, without the double-dating it is impossible to tell whether March 20, 1689, means 1688, 1689, or 1690, and Old or New Style. "It was not until 1751 that the correction of the calendar was legalized by Act of Parliament(24 Geo. II, ch. 23).It was then enacted that throughout all his majesty's dominions theist of January, 1752, should be reckoned the first day of the year, and to correct the error of eleven days, the 3d of September should be reckoned the 14th."
