The National Brass Ensemble is comprised of the finest brass players in major orchestras across the United States. There are twenty-six members most of whom currently hold principal positions in the Cleveland Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, Boston Symphony, New York Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Detroit Symphony, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Repertoire includes excerpts from Giovanni Gabrieli's innovative Sacrae symphoniae (1597), arranged for this ensemble by San Francisco Symphony trombonist Tim Higgins, and the debut of Music for Brass, a new work by celebrated film composer John Williams. Generously supported by Oberlin alumnus Dr. Joseph Markoff and his wife Phyllis, the recording has been inspired by an historic, Grammy Award-winning recording, The Antiphonal Music of Gabrieli, featuring the legendary brass ensembles of the Chicago Symphony and the Philadelphia and Cleveland orchestras. Both brilliant and unexceptional
Before hearing this recording, one cannot help but be impressed by the cumulative resume of this stellar ensemble. And while it is note perfect. and technically impressive (no real surprise in that), it lacks the excitement of other renderings, especially its precedent of decades ago. No doubt some will demur, but before doing so, do a comparison. Never-the-less, every serious brass enthusiast will want to have this recording. It is of historical significance.Before hearing this recording, one cannot help but be impressed by the cumulative resume of this stellar ensemble. And while it is note perfect. and technically impressive (no real surprise in that), it lacks the excitement of other renderings, especially its precedent of decades ago. No doubt some will demur, but before doing so, do a comparison. Never-the-less, every serious brass enthusiast will want to have this recording. It is of historical significance.

Excellent, but…
…if the standard to be met was the famous 1968 collaboration of Philadelphia-Chicago-Cleveland brass (Columbia MS-7209), this 2014 re-creation misses the mark. Nothing yet equals Andrew Kazdin’s production. Perhaps it’s an unfair comparison, as Kazdin’s tape medium and his mic techniques have a quality of their own that digital media and methods just can’t seem to fully replicate. Not to mention that the era of late 1960s-late 1980s represents the apotheosis of American brass playing for many listeners. That said, warmth, depth, diction, projection, antiphonal separation and so forth - all are superior in the 1968 production. So, get both the 1968 original (on CD, of course) and this 2014 effort and judge for yourself. You won’t regret the purchase of either one.
