Best of Designing Women DVD
I had seen this collection of episodes when it originally aired on Lifetime, back when that channel was still actually *showing* Designing Women, and knew it represented a few of the series' best episodes, although not nearly enough of them. What you don't know from watching the DVD, and wouldn't know unless you saw the televised version as I did, is that these 4 episodes are each favorites of the different stars--unfortunately, the creators didn't deign to include the framework "talk show" wherein each star introduced her favorite episode. For example (if I remember right), "They Shoot Fat Women, Don't They?" was done specifically for Delta Burke (Suzanne), to address her weight gain during the series' run, and also the societal stigma surrounding the weight issue in this country. ... "Killing All the Right People" was a show about the AIDS issue and was, I think, a favorite of Dixie Carter (Julia). And so on. New viewers should be prepared for the left-leaning "messages" of each of these early episodes--the creators, the Bloodworth-Thomasons, were and are hard-core Clinton supporters and the values/morals of the episodes reflect that to a large degree. The characters: Julia Sugarbaker (widow/owner/founding partner of the Sugarbaker Interior Design Firm), Suzanne (her shallow, spoiled sister and co-owner of the firm), Mary Jo Shively (designer/partner/divorced mother of two), Charlene Frasier Stillfield (the firm's receptionist, a naive country girl at heart who eventually marries an Air Force Colonel from a monied family), and Anthony Bouvier (the ex-con who joins their firm as a delivery/construction man and serves as a constant foil for their female-oriented humor). My favorite is Julia ("The Terminator"), the opinionated, Joan-Crawford-esque character with the best balance of old-fashioned qualities and feminist/liberal views of the lot. I also empathize with Charlene because of her Arkansas origins and her marriage to a military man (I also married a guy who turned out to be career Navy), but ultimately she and Suzanne are too darn *ditzy* for me to really identify with. I'm still anxiously awaiting more actual *season sets* of DVDs for this show and don't really understand the delay. For the moment, only the first season and this "Best of" collection are out.

The Best of Designing Women
I love Designing Women. It is definitely one of my all time favorite TV series, however I don't know that I would have chosen these particular shows for consideration as the Best. I still highly recommend this DVD but also wish that the producers would offer the seasons instead of just what they consider the Best of Designing Women.

Rapid fire dialog
I forgot just how funny, sharp and unexpected some of the dialog was on Designing Women. It's great to see the evolution of the characters from the selections chosen for the dvd. The pilot episode had the bones of what was to become one of the greatly written sitcoms TV. Be thankful it did improve. The dvd presents a little gem of a time capsule representing the social & cultural pressures and changes occurring. Best of all, it is just plain fun!I forgot just how funny, sharp and unexpected some of the dialog was on Designing Women. It's great to see the evolution of the characters from the selections chosen for the dvd. The pilot episode had the bones of what was to become one of the greatly written sitcoms TV. I'm looking for better
Two great episodes. Three not so great including the very self indulgent They Shoot Fat People...written obviously for Delta Burke. BORING...I hate it when people get on the soapbox for themselves. Dixie Carters role tried to pull it out but.....
