Dark Heresy - Warhammer 40K Roleplay
The fans of the Warhammer 40K universe have been crying out for a Warhammer 40K RPG for 20 years, ever since the release of the Rogue Trader edition. I was one of those fans. Not that I much care for the tabletop game, but the setting has always been excellent. The game was developed by the folks at Black Industries, derived from the joint Green Ronin and Black Industries Warhammer Fantasy Role-Play 2nd Edition. I was left unhappy by WFRP2E, due to several mechanical flaws. Those flaws have been fixed (mostly). Characters in Dark Heresy are from a variety of backgrounds, drawn together to serve a particular inquisitor as "eyes on the ground"... This allows for a variety of play styles, ranging from soap-opera to episodic, and from social-interaction focused to combat heavy. The system ... Characters in Dark Heresy are from a variety of backgrounds, drawn together to serve a particular inquisitor as "eyes on the ground"... This allows for a variety of play styles, ranging from soap-opera to episodic, and from social-interaction focused to combat heavy. The system uses percentile (d100) rolls, d10 rolls, and d5 (d10/2) rolls in the mechanics, thus requiring only one type of physical die. For established role-players, the 10-sided die should be familiar, for novice gamers the d10 may be unfamiliar, but it is read easily, and is relatively common in game shops. Character generation is written from a standpoint of totally random characters; roll for background, roll for career class, roll for stats, get a few starting skills, roll for a lot of roleplaying oriented data, and then spend 400 XP. Most of the rolls are labeled roll or choose, allowing concept characters to be built within the rules. Initial Stats range from a low of about 17 to a high of 45 (48 with later expansions), and center about 31 for the various human types included as potential player characters. No, Space Marines are NOT one of the options. Unskilled attempts on some skills are roll percentiles for half attribute, base skill at full attribute, and peak skill at attribute +20; some skills may not be attempted without training. Attributes can be raised up to an additional 20 points. Situational and difficulty modifiers adjust this by up to 30 points. (Maximum target number is thus 108... minimum is 0.) All actions in the game system use the same core mechanic. Characters start out relatively low powered, and the advancement system provides for both natural progression of abilities, and the occasional step outside the norms, and yet, since each step will only result in taking about half of the available choices, characters remain individuals throughout. Combat is fast, and can easily be handled in both a narrative-only radio-play style, or as a tactical miniatures boardgame, or anywhere in between these extremes. The value of armor is immense, and yet even the toughest worn armor is not proof against major injury. Combat plays fairly fast, and can be very deadly to characters. The game also provides a safety net for player characters: a limited number of rerolls per session. You failed, but can't afford to? Spend fate. One key special ability is present: if your character is killed, you may prevent their death, but you will lower your rerolls per session permanently by 1. The background material is likewise immense; the huge volume is about half background. The material details only one sector, but in some detail. Some of the material is recycled from the Inquisitor miniatures game, but much is new. Bottom Line: Visually gorgeous; long awaited; faithful to source materials; simple, consistent, yet rich & flexible mechanics; well written; worth the money.

With twenty years of solid background to draw on, the Dark Heresy role playing game will provide a richly layered experience for those lucky enough to get a seat at a gaming table. For the GM, no thought has been spared in providing tools and materials to allow the game to proceed in a smooth fashion. Mechanically, the game draws heavily on the Warhammer fantasy roleplay system, and why should it not? The highly talented people who worked on WFRPG over the years might have expected their efforts to be used in such an anticipated setting. Where other games have 'races' for the characters, that would be inappropriate in the 41st Millennium's highly xenophobic society. Here the human characters have different worlds of origin, providing the subtle differences between them that lead to ... The story line is straightforward and yet quite interesting. The characters have been selected as junior Acolytes of the Imperial Inquisition - rooting out the bearers of treachery, treason and heresy. Adventures can be violent and action packed; or contemplative, detective and research oriented - as the group prefers. Well that is all I have for now. The 400 plus pages demand more careful study than I've been allowed so far - the book was only released yesterday! More to come.

great book for the cost
This book is the main book for the Warhammer 40k system and it is a very well designed book. The book is well made and well put together. If you like the Warhammer 40k system this a great addition so that if you want to play a campain with friends in the Warhammer 40k system that does not require models, this is a great book to get.

Dnd + 40k = AMAZING
This book is a must for any D&D and 40k fans. Being one of those myself I was immediately intrigued. And upon purchasing it, for a great deal I might add, I can now combine my hobbies into one awesome game. I recommend it highly
