In John G. Avildsen's THE KARATE KID, Daniel (Ralph Macchio) and his mother (Randee Heller) move from New Jersey to Southern California, where he's not too keen about his new home--until he meets Ali (Elizabeth Shue), an attractive girl who seems to like him. But trouble looms when Ali's ex-boyfriend (William Zabka) and his gang of ruffians start tormenting Daniel. One day, as Daniel is suffering a beating at the hands of these louts, Mr. Miyagi (Noriyuki "Pat" Morita), an elderly Japanese handyman, comes to his rescue. To Daniel's amazement, Miyagi manages to take down the whole group all by himself using karate. Daniel begs to learn this ancient martial art, and soon Miyagi begins the boy's training, teaching Daniel that there is more to karate than fighting. Through a series of lessons, the wise mentor instills a sense of honor and nobility in his young pupil while preparing him for the ultimate karate showdown. However, as Daniel studies the discipline and art of karate, his enemies are learning a dirtier kind of fighting from Kreese (Martin Kove), a cold-blooded ex-marine. Ultimately, the boys will fight to the finish in the All Valley Karate Championship in a rousing and triumphant finale. Morita is a gem as the elderly father figure Miyagi, giving the character warmth, wisdom, and comic charm. Macchio's underdog character inspired an entire generation to run out and join the nearest karate school while chanting "wax on, wax off."

Received this beautifully packaged the complete series of Bewitched starring Elizabeth Montgomery. I have such wonderful youthful memories watching all the funny episodes of Samantha, Darrin, Tabatha, Adam, Endora, Maurice and all her wonderful relatives including the Tates each week. My DVD's arrived in excellant condition, much earlier than expected. I will greatly enjoy watching these wonderful moments again and again. Thank You for providing such loving care in the terrific shipping.

The Cobra Kai dojo is an arguably over-the-top portrayal of a sadistic, macho, and prideful form of martial arts, perhaps a symbolic representation of the "dark side" of martial arts. Johnny and his cronies torment Daniel as much as they can. When Daniel retaliates with a prank at a Halloween dance (where Johnny is seen rolling what appears to be a marijuana cigarette laced with PCP), he is pursued by Johnny and his friends, who proceed to beat him until he can barely stand. Just then, Mr. Miyagi intervenes and rescues Daniel in a surprising display of karate (stunt work by Fumio Demura). Daniel, upon learning this, asks Mr. Miyagi to be his teacher (sensei). With some persuasion, Miyagi agrees to accompany Daniel to confront the sensei of the Cobra Kai dojo and insist that he tell his students to stop their harassment of Daniel. However, the sensei, John Kreese (Martin Kove), is a vicious fighter (later revealed in the sequels as a Vietnam Veteran) who regularly barks out condemnations of mercy or restraint. To settle the matter, Miyagi announces Daniel will enter a Valley-wide tournament where Cobra Kai students can fight Daniel on equal terms. Miyagi also requests that Johnny and his friends stop bullying Daniel in the interim while the boy is trained. Kreese assents and orders his students to leave Daniel alone, but threatens that if Daniel does not appear at the tournament, the harassment will resume and Miyagi himself will be targeted as well. Without spoiling the movie's ending, Mr. Miyagi and Daniel experience conflict as Daniel-son struggles with a male authority figure so intent on teaching focus and patience. But Daniel LaRusso's skill and mental toughness are put on the line in the ending karate tournament where Daniel must face the Cobra Kai clan!

I can't tell you how many times my children watched this when they were growing up! I bought this so my grandkids could have it to watch when they come to visit.. but then again... I wouldn't have bought this oldie goldie if I didn't like it too. It has a good message... not eveything is what it appears to be. Daniel ends up winning over the "bully"... but his greatest victory was within himself. In today's gray value system... kids need to learn right from wrong and to believe in themselves. This is excellent. It's a 10 on your scale of 5/5.I can't tell you how many times my children watched this when they were growing up! The Karate Kid
This movie is more than just a kid who wants to be a karate expert. It teaches the value of discipline and applying oneself to obedience and practicing the basics. I bought it to help teach my son the value of practice and discipline. There is more to the story that "wax on" and "wax off." This charaxcter trait applies in everything that we do whether it is in sports or music or art or whatever your interest. It takes personal application and diligence. Without that you will probaly fail in whatever you try to accomplish.This movie is more than just a kid who wants to be a karate expert. It teaches the value of discipline and applying oneself to obedience and practicing the basics. I bought it to help teach my son the value of practice and discipline. good movie for the price
The movie played just fine and my grandson thoroughly enjoyed it.

The Karate Kid
Classic 80's movie. David vs Goliath story set with karate. Ralph Macchio plays Daniel, a teen removed from New Jersey and planted in California. He meets Allie, played by the lovely Elisabeth Shue, and they take to each other. But Johnny takes offense and bullies Daniel. Mr. Miyagi, the handyman, helps Daniel in many ways and it sets up the conclusion.
