Reminiscent of ALICE IN WONDERLAND and LABYRINTH, MIRRORMASK is a fantasy tale of an intelligent young girl on a journey through a magical world. It is also a visually astounding piece of filmmaking, updating the fairy-tale quest in a coming-of-age story imbued with dark beauty. Written by Neil Gaiman (SANDMAN) and directed by frequent collaborator and illustrator Dave McKean, the film mixes live action and animation, and manages to keep the graphic novelists' aesthetic largely intact: the frames are full of weirdly-skewed perspectives, foggy patches, and mismatched textures that appear grandly decayed. Stephanie Leonidas plays Helena, a young girl who juggles in her father's circus, but longs for a "normal" life. She spends her free time drawing elaborate, fantastical black-and-white pictures which cover every surface of her bedroom. One night, after an argument with her mother (Gina McKee) during which Helena lets fly some rather painful pronouncements, Mom falls ill with an unspecified affliction. As the family waits for news and the circus struggles financially, Helena blames herself for the misfortune. The night before her mother's surgery, Helena is mysteriously transported to a world which bears a strong resemblance to her own drawings, and is populated by strange creatures who follow an even stranger logic. Helena and her traveling companion, fellow juggler Valentine (Jason Barry), sign on to find a mysterious charm which will wake the queen of the city--also played by McKee--from her deep sleep, defeating the forces of darkness and returning Helena home. The film's outstanding art direction is complemented by witty dialogue and some genuinely creepy moments (the words "don't let them see you're afraid" are chill-inducing). Meanwhile, Leonidas's performance is remarkable, maintaining a likeability, charm, and freshness that is all the more amazing considering it was delivered against a green screen, with her special-effect co-stars edited in later.

My replacement disc arrived on time earlier today and securely wrapped. After eyeballing the disc, I agree with the vendor that the disc looks to be in very good condition as promised. I doubt if I will have problems viewing it, and I am happy to recommend the vendor to others.

    A visually quirky film that bridges childhood to adolescence, to adulthood.

    This is an interesting type of 'coming of age' story. The quirky visuals are strange at first but then become increasingly intriguing. Like other Neil Gaiman work, there is that theme of parallel worlds that connect to our fantasies. I'm not sure this film is a good choice for anyone who dislikes or doesn't understand metaphors, but for those who enjoy subtle humor and life lessons that aren't always obvious, it's a lovely film. I had seen it some years ago, quite by accident, and had been searching for it since. I think that is a good indication of how much I connected with the film.

    Dream of a dream?

    Found film from a Steampunk site link. Didn't really know what to expect before I bought it. The posted review didn't really give a true enough taste of movie although the basics were accurate. Its about parallel universes and how lives in one interact with another, played through an almost dream (dream of a dream?) I liked it even though it's probably more of a teen/young adult film. I will watch it again as everyone needs some fantasy escapism plus there is too much detail to take in on one viewing It won't be to everyone's taste, particularly if you wanted horror or blood and guts.

    Simply Marvelous

    An exquisite treat for the eyes, ears, and imagination. The visuals are absolutely spectacular, and the soundtrack is breathtaking. Well written, with a host of quotable one-liners. Beyond that, it actually has a good story! One of my favorite aspects of this movie is that it is completely devoid of any sexual content, and contains only one mild profanity. Here lies proof that good entertainment and moral cleanliness are not mutually exclusive!

    Oz for the digital age

    Neil Gaiman's an excellent, imaginative writer. Everyone connected to this movie acquitted themselves well, and the result is treatalicious mindcandy movietripping of a very special kind. If you watch movies to escape reality and have experiences you cannot get in Normaltown, you're in for a good ride with Mirrormask. I bought this for my teen daughter, but it was admired by all (including her-the ultimate compliment) who count what's cool.

    The Mirrormask in all of us.

    I really enjoy watching this film, I have since the first time I sat down with my friends in the living room on that rainy night. The lights were out due to the storm, so we all huddled together around the laptop to watch. This film is very much something to enjoy with others. The elements of mystery, fantasy, and even a hint of thrill cause me to smile throughout the duration of the film. In some ways the movie reflects every genre, and has something for everyone, and even things we can relate to. Not fitting in well with others, feeling like an outcast, feeling detatched from family. The biggest impact of relation is the idea that many people completely throw themselves in stories and ideas that they keep secret.
