Adapted from a Noel Coward play, EASY VIRTUE is essentially a tale of Old World manners vs. New World freedom. The year is 1929, and John Whitaker (Ben Barnes) has just married a feisty American racecar driver named Larita (Jessica Biel). John is the eldest of the Whitakers--a prim English family--and when he returns home with Larita on his arm, his mother (Kristin Scott Thomas) is none too pleased. John's choice of a loud, brash American has raised everyone's eyebrows, including his sisters, Hilda (Kimberly Nixon) and Marion (Katherine Parkinson). The only person who seems to approve of Larita is Mr. Whitaker--John's weary, put-upon father (Colin Firth). Try as she might, Larita has a hard time impressing the icy, unforgiving Mrs. Whitaker, and indeed, the entire Whitaker clan proves to be a rather eccentric, unhappy bunch. John had promised Larita a short visit, but due to pressure from his mother, they stay longer than planned. Time drags on, and the friction between Mrs. Whitaker and Larita only gets worse. When Hilda digs up something scandalous from Larita's past, tensions bubble to a boiling point, and Larita is forced to face some rather hard truths about herself and her new husband.For fans of period films, EASY VIRTUE is a visual treat, set on a sprawling country estate and with gorgeous and impeccable costumes. Director Stephan Elliot (THE ADVENTURES OF PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT) tries to inject a bit of modern zing by filling scenes with contemporary renditions of Cole Porter songs, while Biel and Scott Thomas breathe some life into their lightweight characters. Though the source play, with its airy plot, isn't one of Coward's most popular works, fans of Colin Firth's work in costume comedies and dramas will be delighted with the actor's performance here.

Good plot with great support from the actors.
Bought this DVD for my wife. She had seen the leading lady in later days appearing in TV series and noted how much she had added to this movie and that she would like to see it again. I checked e-Bay and found it easily, bought it and she still enjoy's it as well today as she did at the movies. The DVD arrived on time and in perfect condition. Quite a good little diversionary movie if you wish this type of story, or like my wife, the actors.Bought this DVD for my wife. Silly Fluff
This is a silly movie that wastes the talent of screen luminaries such as Kristin Scott Thomas and Colin Firth in what amounts to a shallow tale of mistaken love. Jessica Biel is gorgeous as Larita Whittaker, an adventurous race car driver. For some reason she has whirlwind romance and marriage to John Whittaker, a young bon vivant jaunting on the Continent. Needless to say John's family, headed by Thomas as his mother together with his 2 spinster sisters, are none to happy with his choice of bride. The fact that his marriage to Larita eliminates the possibility of the advantageouos union with the next door Sarah (including her land and properties) makes the presence of the flashy Larita intolerable to Thomas. In the end (leaving out a couple of surprise details that really don't ... Firth is wonderful as the jaded husband, torn from the opium dens of post-WWI Europe and brought back to life and civilization by his prim wife, Thomas. Especially nice turn by Kris Marshall as the household butler, Furber. His admission to being an ex-con (his crime is the darkly humorous part) is a highlight so watch for it!

This movie gets smoking hot by it's conclusion!
Alba totally embodied this role! I purchased solely from seeing her do the tango on youtube in the movie. Colin Firth started dry-but by the end was smoking hot!!! Highly recommend!

I bought this product as a gift, it looks fine (in package) but for obvious reasons I cannot comment on its performance. I'm sure it compares well to others, but again, I can't say with 100% certainty as I have not used it, THIS IS A GIFT! (Now hopefully I've written enough so ebay will let me submit this POSITIIVE review! I didn't realize I had to submit 100 characters.) There's not much to say, this is the DVD I wanted, at the price I wanted, and it came in good time....I bought this product as a gift, it looks fine (in package) but for obvious reasons I cannot comment on its performance.
