À propos de ce produit

Product Information

Josephine Tey re-creates one of history's most famous -- and vicious -- crimes in her classic bestselling novel, a must read for connoisseurs of fiction, now with a new introduction by Robert BarnardInspector Alan Grant of Scotland Yard, recuperating from a broken leg, becomes fascinated with a contemporary portrait of Richard III that bears no resemblance to the Wicked Uncle of history. Could such a sensitive, noble face actually belong to one of the world's most heinous villains -- a venomous hunchback who may have killed his brother's children to make his crown secure? Or could Richard have been the victim, turned into a monster by the usurpers of England's throne? Grant determines to find out once and for all, with the help of the British Museum and an American scholar, what kind of man Richard Plantagenet really was and who killed the Little Princes in the Tower. The Daughter of Timeis an ingeniously plotted, beautifully written, and suspenseful tale, a supreme achievement from one of mystery writing's most gifted masters.

  • An Intellectually Challenging Historical Mystery

This PB book was a difficult mystery about the history of King Richard the 3rd. If one was familiar with United Kingdom history, it would have been easier. Nevertheless, I got through the book, and found it to be well-written and well-paced. The policeman was bedridden, convalescing in the hospital. Bored silly, a visitor, fairly unwittingly, got him started on researching the history of King Richard the 3rd, with the help of an American visitor who could physically research London libraries, and bring books and findings to the hospitalized policeman. This mystery showed how research was performed before Google. The book's author remains well-respected, and was certainly erudite. Recommended.

  • What was this author thinking?

This was recommended to me by a friend, but it's the weirdest book I've ever encountered. The author apparently wanted to put out a book about the known facts relating to the deaths of the two sons of Edward IV. For some bizarre reason she chose to parcel the facts out a bit at a time as part of a "story." Only, there is no story. The book opens with a detective who is nearly recovered from an injury. Since he's confined to bed, people bring him history books, which he reads. And then he asks them to bring him more books. That's it. That's the story. Not to spoil the big climax, but... there is tea. Why the author didn't just write a nonfiction book I have no idea. Or an actual story where people do things other than sitting on a bed reading. It's baffling.

  • Very influential book

I first saw this book referenced in a Martha Grimes mystery, and was intrigued. Later after I'd read it for myself, I saw it referenced yet again in an Elizabeth Peters mystery. So it's safe to say that anybody who loves true historical mysteries is going to know (and probably love) this book. To sum up, Richard III was not the hunch-backed sneaky villain who killed his royal nephews in the Tower of London--as stated by Sir Thomas More, and even William Shakespeare in his play, "Richard III" ("my kingdom for a horse!"). No, Richard was actually a noble person of intellect and kindness. He was, though, slandered dreadfully by the man who stole his throne from him--this other fellow had to blacken Richard's name, since he himself had NO right to the throne whatsoever. How he did it and ...

  • Fun and fascinating historical thriller!

This is the story of the once much maligned Richard III of England. Tey wrote this from the perspective of a book about Richard given to a detective friend recovering in the hospital in l951. Tey herself sensed Richard's horrible legacy was over-the-top and possibly contrived by Henry VII. In l951, few questioned the ogre who was Richard - the bogeyman of children's dreams - but her book literally started the historical search for the truth...which today includes finding his remains thus proving he wasn't hunched back and more. This is history made fun and fascinating...as you can tell "I LOVED IT"!
