There was no shortage of historic rock music festivals in 1969, from the unforgettable highs of Woodstock to the crashing lows of Altamont and everything in between. Meanwhile, interest was steadily building on another front. A full-fledged 1950s rock and roll revival was brewing, and the idiom’s pioneers were experiencing a renaissance. Suddenly, they were no longer viewed as over-the-hill relics, but still-vital sources of real rock and roll. Combining the two contrasting demographics at one event was a rare sight to behold, but the Toronto Rock ’n’ Roll Revival 1969, held that September 13 at the University of Toronto’s Varsity Stadium, represented that unlikely hybrid. That afternoon the Father of Rock & Roll returned to lead the apostles of rock into the next decade. After decades of inferior releases, for the first time, this historical concert is presented in its entirety. HAIL HAIL ROCK & ROLL!

A historic look at the father of Rock n' Roll
Oh Chuck. The true virtue of this recording is for true fans and students of one of the founders of Rockn'Roll. This show is from around 1970 and our hero is in barn storming tour mode, several years after his string of defining hits and an unfortunate prison term. (That is sad history to read elsewhere.) At this point in his career, Chuck was already driving into towns and grabbing a quick local pickup band for his shows. He actually jokes about it candidly during the show and the performance shows this. The recording is clear and you hear lots of the downsides of this with uneven tempos throughout and johnny B Goode himself very sloppy and loose enough to make even the casual listener wince occasionally. The glow to this performance time capsule is the man himself. He is a ... Oh Chuck. The true virtue of this recording is for true fans and students of one of the founders of Rockn'Roll. The glow to this performance time capsule is the man himself. He is a charming, self-deprecating devil with the stadium audience. Beyond the rock legend he is a true entertainer in the 40's and 50's mode and his vocal phrasing even in banter give no doubt that this is the man that wrote so many incredible songs.
