PRICK UP YOUR EARS is the tragic, true story of flamboyant British playwright Joe Orton, from his days as a drama student, through his meteoric rise to fame in British theatre, to his violent death at the hands of his envious lover Kenneth Halliwell. Gary Oldman portrays the rebellious Orton, who rose to success in the 1960s with his plays, LOOT and WHAT THE BUTLER SAW. Orton charmed theatrical society while living illegally as a homosexual, dangerously taking lovers and street hustlers, and living with his long-term collaborator Kenneth Halliwell (Alfred Molina) whose rage and envy prompted him to violently murder Orton in 1967.

His writings & enthusiasm was abruptly ended by jealous life partner, Kenneth Halliwell (Alfred Molina), who beat Orton to death in 1967. "Prick Up Your Ears" is a true story of Orton's short-lived fame in British theater. His hits, "The Ruffian on the Stair" (play, 1966), "Loot" (play, 1967) & "What the Butler Saw" (play, 1969) are most memorable. Superbly cast, especially Vanessa Redgrave as Peggy Ramsay, Orton's genius, witty, sexy & gorgeous agent, blends so well with Oldman & Shawn as ... Redgrave's comical timing's perfect for one-liners, as she adds a touch of grin on her lips. She's in her prime when this motion picture was filmed & sizzles! "Prick Up Your Ear's" screenplay is worthy of Redgrave & Oldman. Though Orton struggled being gay when it was illegal & ends violently, he coped by surrounding himself with comedy: Peggy Ramsay(Redgrave): "Ken was the first wife. He did all the work & the waiting & then..." John Lahr(Shawn): "Well, first wives don't usually beat their husband's head in." Ramsay: "No. Though why I can't think." Lahr: "So what does that make you? The second wife?" Ramsay: "Better than that, dear. The widow." John Lahr's (Wallace Shawn) an investigative reporter who's collecting data from Ramsay for a story about Orton's life & partnership with Halliwell. She conveys that their partnership started swell; but, as Halliwell's career's shadowed by Orton's, green-eyed envy overtook him. Orton was famous for sexually scandalous comical plays. A few are loosely based on his & Halliwell's lives. Orton was anything but monogamous. Orton’s sex could be for the sake of pleasure, or as Foucault put it, "ars erotica." Since Halliwell wasn't credited, even though he sometimes contributed to Orton's work, he flipped out. Depicting true to reality gay life in London in the 1960's, when being gay was illegal, by default as a gay writer, Orton was in-your-face out. There are a few gay sex scenes that earned a R rating. It's a great (1987) movie: Redgrave's & Oldman's thru & thru. fascinating, funny & tragic!
A brilliant film with standout performances by Gary Oldman and Alfred Molina. If you really want to get inside Joe Ortons head to understand his savage wit - I highly recommend this film. An interesting side story as well on behalf of the noted critic & author John Lahr, played with great aplomb by Wally Shawn as Mr. Lahr attempts to decipher the genius of Orton. I was introduced to this film many years ago after being cast in one of Orton's farces. Needless to say, I bought of copy of Orton's Diaries (The subject of this film) as well as Lahr's book in preparation for rehearsals. . . it really helped my gauge my perspective towards Orton as a farceur - Yes, as with any British sex comedy, he tackles sex but there is this wicked sense of savagery and rebellion found in Orton that well ... Better than most of his contemporaries (Simon, Shaeffer, Ackbourne, and Osborn) of the time. Unlike your 'chase 'em around the stage in underwear, Natalie needs a Nightie' playful sex romp.- Orton really takes aim against England's stifling sense of propriety, it's authority and outward neglect of the lower and working classes. Watch the film and you see will understand what made Orton tick. Though his untimely death was indeed tragic, as well as the circumstances that led to his murder by lover Kenneth Halliwell - Orton himself was, I believe way ahead of his time. Ortons genius, his plays - his ability to both seduce and charm his well bred audiences with such inspired absurdity, only to wind up his targets and let the axe fall have left me (and I'm sure many others) breathless. Orton loves the dangers of bath-houses and liaisons in public restrooms; Halliwell, not as charming or attractive as Orton, doesn't fare so well in those environs. While both long to become writers, it is Orton who achieves fame - his plays "Entertaining Mr. Sloane" and "Loot" become huge hits in London of the sixties, and he's even commissioned to write a screenplay for the Beatles. But Orton's success takes him farther from Halliwell, whose response ended both his life and the life of the up-and-coming ... Good movie with a good cast
A true story about a gay playwright and his lover, who murders him after a rocky romance. I thought it was a good movie with a good cast, but I thought it was too long. At 2 1/2 hours, I thought the story could have been summed up in 2. I found myself just waiting for the end.
