Directed by John Huston, THE ASPHALT JUNGLE is considered by many to be the defining film of the crime oeuvre. After many years in prison, Doc (Sam Jaffe), a seemingly over-the-hill and retired (i.e. rehabilitated) criminal decides upon his release to make one last go of it. His attempts at reuniting the old gang come up against the intentions of his partner who intends to start a Kentucky horse farm with his share of the take. Doc's lecherous tendencies for young curvaceous women get him nowhere but delight the viewer with standout performances by Jean Hagen and a lusty Marilyn Monroe. The tremendous character development is aided by Huston and Ben Maddow's script, and Huston's direction. Based on a novel by W.R. Burnett. Remade in 1958 as BADLANDERS, in 1963 as CAIRO and 1972 as COOL BREEZE.

Jewel Heist~ thriller~ NOIR at it's VERY best~ 5 star~
EXCELLENT Noir crime drama~ just released con has a detailed "plan" to steal some jewels~ and make everyone involved rich~ John Huston directed this dark noir ~ Just released con "Doc " played to the hilt by Sam Jaffe who evades his police tails and ends up at a bookie joint~ owned by Cobbie (Marc Lawrence)who in gathers the cons and crooks for a jewelry heist~ the bank roller for the heist is nearly broke lawyer Alanzo Emmerich (Louis Calhern)along with James Whitemore as Gus who knows every con in town~ Sterling Haydon~ as Dix the 'muscles' to make sure Doc and the diamonds are not taken by anyone~the odd assortment work well as the trip thru the sewer gets them inside the vault, OPENED WITH nitro~which in turn sets off alarms which aids in their escape~ ... This Title Does Not Describe this Memorable Movie
"Crime does not pay" is the theme of this film noir movie produced in 1950. It stars some of the forgotten stars of the past in a movie that shows the beginning, commission, and aftermath of a jewel burglary of a large store. Sterling Hayden plays Dix, a "hooligan" (tough guy) who escorts the man holding the jewels after the theft. Sam Jaffe (from the Dr. Ben Casey TV show) plays Doc, the ringleader and brains of the theft, who was just released from prison and becomes the main suspect. Louis Calhern plays a crooked lawyer who hopes to swindle the thieves but becomes entangled in a deadly web. James Whitmore plays a front man, who operates a restaurant and assists by alerting everyone of where the police are. Jean Hagen plays Dix's girlfriend who becomes ... The movie's one Academy Award nomination was for its Best Director, John Huston (Chinatown). He did not win. The movie reminded me of a Dragnet TV show but is especially good because it provides a wonderful character study of each criminal. Each has a vice, and it is fun to watch for it. You will find yourself pulling for the criminals, but aren't we glad that crime does not pay. You will also be amazed at how many cigarettes people smoked in the 1950s!

Vintage crime caper
An early gem from featuring the iconic Marilyn Monroe. They don't make movies like this anymore but they should.

One of my favorites, very faithful to the book. Great actors, cinematography, complex plot elements. Loved it!

GOOD OLD TIME CRIME CAPER WITH GRIT!
This movie is an old time crime caper with substance.......GRITTY performances by a veteran cast, an early look at Marilyn Monroe, and FAST PACED, NEVER STOP ACTION. The d.v.d. Quality is excellent in every respect, which promotes further enjoyment of this classic.
