The FT-450D is a no nonsense rig with all the features you will need.
The Yaesu FT-450D is a unique jewel among HF/50 Xcvrs. It has been used by DXpeditions around the world with great success because it provides all the required features in a compact, light weight package. It features all the selectivity options you will need for CW, RTTY, data, and SSB with nothing to buy or add on. Prior to finding the FT-450D I was disappointed that all the rigs that had all the desirable operating functions include a lot of unnecessary junk (in my opinion). Most modern rigs use a colorful touch screen LCD display with waterfall, etc. These displays look pretty but add little in functionality. And you have to stare into a lot of light just like using a computer. In contrast the FT-450D uses a negative image screen with simple graphics to identify all functions. ... FT450D a very well equipped HF 100w rig
At first it’s a bit to get used to. Lots of filters and fancy built in features like a tuner (although limited to a mismatch of 3:1), keyer, a memory system to recall favorite freq mode, filter settings and more (almost everything except for power output). Once you get used to using some of these features it’s a lot of fun to use but you will have to spend some time reading the manual - more than once. At first it’s a bit to get used to. Title was accurate (it does work great).
A great first HF transceiver. Reading the manual makes learning the various operations and features pretty easy. I can't think of any bad features and it is fairly user friendly for a newly upgraded General Licensee like me. It does work great, no issues at all even though it is pre-owned. The Yaseu FT450D is very popular but has been discontinued by Yaseu. They are not easy to find. The price on this one was very fair and reasonable. No complaints.A great first HF transceiver. A VERY happy Ham Radio operator!
Greetings from KA6LES: I’ve dealt with many transmitters/receivers/transceivers over the decades. My 1st YAESU was/is an FT-101 which has functioned perfectly since 1980 (when I purchased it new) and is still in use. This newest edition (YAESU FT-450D) has so many fantastic attributes; it will take me months to capitalize on them! Just to say; it’s a great Amateur Radio does not do it justice and is acknowledged by many Amateur Radios operators as one which is highly recommended. MY first HF radio.
This radio is everything a new user could hope for. It's easy to use, and pulls in stations from around the world with a simple long wire antenna. The manual is well written and easy to use. I'm still playing with all the controls and learning new things all the time. I would highly recommend this radio to others.
