The Doors were the antithesis of windblown Californian pop. Dark, brooding and alienated, every element of the quartet's metier was unveiled on their debut album. Highly literate, they wedded Oedipian tragedy with counter-culture nihlism and, in "Light My Fire", expressed exotic images previously unheard in pop. Howlin' Wolf, Brecht and Weill are acknowledged as musical reference points, a conflict between the physical and cerebral that give THE DOORS its undiluted tension. Or you can just enjoy it as a brilliant album that sucks you in as it breathes out the '60's.

The Doors First Album
What do I like about the album? That it has held up after all these years as great rock and roll music. The Doors had their own sound and at least tried to have meaningful lyrics most of the time. True, tehy were young, anti establishment and against the war in Vietnam. How many bands from the sixties or any other era sustain their relavence for 40 years and counting? Of course it's not all "genious" but then I don't think it was ever meant to be. They played fun rock that reached rock fans but also the mainstream audience. Songs like Light My Fire and (on their second album) When the Music's Over changed radio. Two new things happened. Songs longer than 2 and a half minutes got airplay, and FM radio got a foothold and started what would replace AM radio. These things transformed ... What do I like about the album? The Doors first album is still great to listen to becuase it's great rock, and also the culture of an anti-war movement may not exist as it did back in the 60's, but it is still relevent today. Much of society, rock fans or not, is opposed to the War in Iraq, and any war that can't reasonably be justified. That way of thinking wasn't the case prior to the anti-war movement of the sixties. The Doors don't you over the head with a lecture. Jim Morrison was by nature poetic and their first album demonstrates his gift for words, and the groups gift for making great rock and roll. I make no apology for being a Doors fan despite their being from the 60's. Time may have dated when they were popular, but their music is not dated as long as people enjoy rock and roll. Few things have held up as well as this album for so long.

After surviving the "Leave it to Beaver" 50's of faux reality in a black & white box, The Doors ushered in the kind of unnamable tension younger people were experiencing in masses. So this CD is the one that defines a new generation of heavy rock that dealt with the darker sides of being human & a young adult. Interestingly, one of my middle-20's sons made the trek to France to be at Morrison's grave. So his popularity among the same age people today, forty years later, is quite similar.

The One That Started It All
Must have. A new genre of music started with the Doors. I believe that the grooves were worn out on the LP that I purchased in the late 60's when it came out, playing it over and over again on my old turntable (I think my EX has it somewhere.) I thought that Vinyl was Final, but then 8-Track, then Cassette and finally CD arrived as technology advanced. Got them all from this Group. Too bad Jim is not around to continue living his success. Even sons of Navy Admirals can find dark paths to follow.Must have. A new genre of music started with the Doors. this album, and Strange Days put a spell on everyone who listened to them...not only because of the magnetic quality of Jims looks, voice, and lyrics, but also the mysterious soundtrack provided by the remaining three..the genious of their sound truely carried the music of that time to a different level...It was a magical, restless effect from some guys who had their mojo working..and not only was it powerful music..but beautiful, etherial, and seductive...it was a highway to the edge of the night.
