BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger is a 2D fighting game by Arc System Works, the studio that created the distinctive Guilty Gear series. As the developer's first 2D fighter developed for high-definition systems, BlazBlue features fast, anime-inspired fighting action, which plays out over detailed, multi-layered backgrounds, with flashy, sometimes psychedelic visual effects for special attacks and big hits. The fighting takes on a certain rhythm, as there is a split second pause after each hit, giving players who can catch on to the cadence a chance to use the brief freezes to time their next move or counterattack. The action is very fast, and without the stuttering pauses, few humans could hope to keep up. Each character has a special "drive" attack move, which is difficult to perform, but devastating if used correctly. The story of the game involves dissent and destruction among a powerful council, known unofficially as "the Library," which controls a great power that once saved humanity, but which now wields its power in protective, some say repressive, ways. The game's developer declared BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger to be the "spiritual successor" to the Guilty Gear series. Its roster of combatants is a rogue's gallery of weird, super-powered, emotionally complicated characters, including vampires and werewolves, and the beat-'em-up action plays out to an unrelenting precision-metal soundtrack by composer Daisuke Ishiwatari.

For you, if you like Guilty Gear but tired of the same game every time.
Although it borrows a lot of things from Guilty Gear, this is a fresh start if you like GG series, but you´re tired of the same game over an over, with the same characters every time. Is good to say that it´s not a mere clone, BlazBlue has enough elements to stand by itself. The gameplay is similar: your character has normal moves, special moves, and super special moves you excecute using 50% of the local gauge (Heat Gauge here), and you have a 1-hit-KO move, but in BlazBlue is not a "desperate move" you can do when you are losing, it´s more like a Stylish Finish, since you can only do it in the last round, when your oponent has 20% of healt or less (which can be ereased with a normal super special anyway). BlazBlue is more focused on performing combos on grounded enemies and at some ... BlazBlue is more focused on performing combos on grounded enemies and at some extent aerial opoenents too. Instead of a "dust" button, yo can send flying an oponent with simple moves. There´s a "Drive" button, wich allows each character to use the "specialty" of each one, difering between characters (one use a living bo, some other use huge revolvers, another one uses a huge sword, etcetera). This "specialty" is used in combos, and in some cases to set 'traps' to your oponent, being the main force of each character. One thing you should notice is the low difficult setting. Usually when I play a fighting game, I play it on normal (or whatever they use to measure the difficulty, like the level 4 in the old arcade fighting games) and have a lot of troubble with the final boss, at least the first times, when i´m still getting used to the control scheme. But in BlazBlue I played at normal difficulty, and it took me a couple "credits" to beat the boss. That the case, skillfull players will have no trouble beating it the first time, so I reccomend using higher difficulties. In all, the characters are well balanced. You will like some of them, while others feel like taken out from a character mass factory (I mean, cliché characters). But shurely there´s one you´ll like.

To win a round, one player must either incapacitate the other by inflicting damage through various attacks to reduce health or by having more remaining health after the clock runs out if the rules of the match has one. Every character has a weak, medium and strong attack. Also every character has a "do something cool" technique, called a Drive attack, which is unique to that character. Those attacks are also known as "A", "B", "C" and "D". Various combos can be performed by every character through careful input of regular and drive attacks. As combos become longer, each attack will do less damage than normal to give the opponent a chance to retaliate. Grabs can be incorporated into combos also by pressing the "B" and "C" buttons at the same time. Occasionally, some attacks (e.g. Jin's Hirensou) will use portions of the player's heat gauge at the bottom of the screen. The heat gauge is filled by either dealing or receiving damage. When at a certain percentage, special moves called "distortion drives" can be performed. When a distortion drive is successfully performed and connects with the opponent, it deals massive damage and is visually flashier than normal attacks. Along with attacks every character has two types of block. One is the regular block that can be broken with a "guard crush". That can be achieved by pushing the "guard libra" gauge all the way to the opponent's side through repeated attacks. If the opponent keeps blocking, then their guard can be broken, leaving them open for attack. The second type of block is a barrier block, which is initiated by blocking while holding the "A" and "B" buttons at the same time. A barrier block cannot be broken like a normal guard, but there is a limit on how long one can be held, which is indicated by the barrier gauge. If the barrier gauge empties, then the player will receive 150% damage until it regenerates to half-full. [edit] Advanced tactics A form of an advanced tactic is a "rapid cancel". These can be done after any attack to instantly cancel the character sprite's animation frames and reset back to the resting position. However this can only be done at the cost of 50% of the heat gauge. Counters are the one of the easier tactics to perform. All that is required is for a player to strike their opponent while they are in the middle of an attacking animation to stop them in their tracks. This leaves an opponent open for a combo. In addition to a player's regular block options, they can also "instant block", which requires stricter timing, but reduces the amount of time the character is stuck in their blocking animation and give you a little heat. If a player is under pressure from the opponent, a "barrier burst" can be done at any time to send the opponent away to create some space at the cost of having no barrier block and receiving 150% damage for the rest of the round. A barrier burst may also be used offensively to break the opponents guard (your character will still suffer the extra damage and be unable to barrier block for the remainder of the round).

One of my favorite fighters of all time!!!
Honestly, there's no way I could describe everything I love about BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger because I would be writing a novella. All you need to know is that this has become one of my favorite fighters of all time and the level of polish and detail this 2D wonder has is amazing. The character designs are excellent, the fighting mechanics are top-notch and there are even extra animated scenes that feature chibi (super adorable) versions of the characters talking about the BlazBlue universe. I know BlazBlue is only targeting a certain type of fighting game fan, but I think the mechanics are cool enough to entertain anyone even remotely interested in the genre. I'm sure that once the community gets its hands on this game, the true test of balancing will begin and issues I might have missed ... I decided to buy this game after playing it several times with a friend of mine. You can either play in vs. mode, arcade mode, or follow the story mode. The story is very captivating, and at times a bit hard to follow, which made me want to complete it even more so I could try to piece everything together. Plus the soundtrack is really good as well.
