Beautiful, powerful, clean sounding amp
I've been using this integrated amplifier for almost a month now, so I think I can provide a decent review. First, the positives. The power and sound quality and clarity are outstanding. If you read a lot of reviews on this amp you'll notice that a lot of people remark about their perception of how "clean" the amp sounds, and I agree. It's very hard to quantify, and I'm not sure it's something that could ever be reflected in technical testing and hard data, but the clarity is there. It has a very attractive appearance (I got the silver one; I think most people probably do because silver components are not nearly as common in the US as black components), and it is very heavy as you'd expect a high-quality, powerful amp to be. I've used it to drive two sets of tower speakers and it ... I've been using this integrated amplifier for almost a month now, so I think I can provide a decent review. First, the positives. I've used it to drive two sets of tower speakers and it does so effortlessly. The thing barely even gets warm. I'm sure it could drive pretty much anything on the market. Not a lot of bells and whistles, but for the price you just can't beat this quality and performance. Now for four little nit-picks. First, the volume control has no LED on it, so you can't see where the volume is set from several feet away. This is a small but baffling omission, as adding this feature would have added virtually nothing to the cost, and everyone who owns an amp or a receiver would and should expect this feature. Second, there is no switched or unswitched outlet on the back, so you can't plug in another component for convenience. Third, the bass, treble and balance controls are rectangular instead of round, which is something that no one seems to prefer, including me. When the controls are straight up and down, it looks ok, but when used, it looks goofy. Yamaha should have simply stuck with standard, round knobs. This happens sometimes at the corporate level; some executive has a bright idea and the company implements it without the "beta testing" it should have had. If Yamaha had tested this out with people, they would have clearly determined that almost no one would prefer these rectangular controls. I've read literally hundreds of reviews on this amp, and I've seen three people who said they liked them. Lastly, the "Loudness" feature, rather than boosting lower and higher frequencies like all other loudness controls do in my experience, instead uses a "cut" approach, decreasing midrange frequencies as it's turned up (or down, really). While I love the fact that the loudness is progressive and not just a button, I wish Yamaha would have implemented it normally as a db boost rather than a db cut. All in all, a great, wonderful-sounding, powerful amp that does the job I need it to do magnificently.

My Yamaha A-S701 was an excellent value for its power, but its sound is NOT like a tube amp.
I owned a Yamaha A-S701 in the past and it was an excellent value for its power. I've owned about a dozen different integrated amps in the past 30+ years, and the only amp that was noticeably much better (in sound from the same speakers being tested) was a much more powerful class A Krell Kav 400xi amp that cost (new vs new) about 3X more than the Yamaha A-S701. My Denon PMA-1600NE was more similar to the Yamaha A-S701 vs the Krell Kav 400xi. The Yamaha A-S701 has a cold (sterile) clear sound, whereas the Denon 1600NE alters the sound (not in a nicer way) much more than the Yamaha or Krell. If you prefer a 'warm'' sound, then a tube amp is probably what you would prefer; but because of my room acoustics and my ears, I prefer a clearer sound (such as from this Yamaha) vs what I heard ... I owned a Yamaha A-S701 in the past and it was an excellent value for its power.
