This is an excellent movie, that gently asks timeless questions of faith.
This movie "Some Things that Stay", also titled "Run Away Home" is beautifully charming on a spiritual level. I absolutely love the way this movie points out things Catholics / Christians understand, yet the world fails to see, or make sense. And further, quietly points out the many faces of Christians, those that believe in their hearts, those that go through motions, those that suffer and die before blooming into a full life, those that fulfill their duty that God calls them to, even if not society's norm, and those that are blessed that may be unaware of it themselves. Katie Boland plays a young girl being raised by atheist parents. Her father, absorbed in his art career, moves the family yearly, to the social frustration of his own kids, his very own offspring who he should be ... This movie "Some Things that Stay", also titled "Run Away Home" is beautifully charming on a spiritual level. I absolutely love the way this movie points out things Catholics / Christians understand, yet the world fails to see, or make sense. And further, quietly points out the many faces of Christians, those that believe in their hearts, those that go through motions, those that suffer and die before blooming into a full life, those that fulfill their duty that God calls them to, even if not society's norm, and those that are blessed that may be unaware of it themselves. Katie Boland plays a young girl being raised by atheist parents. Her father, absorbed in his art career, moves the family yearly, to the social frustration of his own kids, his very own offspring who he should be considering as his priority. The family's mother counts out the Bible as a "work of fiction" despite all the archeological evidence, secular supporting documents found at Alexandria and Kumran, and the hope it has brought for thousands of years. Luckily, there is the character Helen (Nadia Litz) who remains unmoved and steadfast in wanting to introduce the family to God. Soon after bringing God into their lives, the family experiences blessings, that notably, the secular world is quick to negate as "chance" or "coincidence". She escapes the bull through an unlikely flight to a safe doorway, the family's children somehow escape the tuberculosis disease despite being exposed to not one, but two active contagious sources, and they finally get to bond with a family that wishes them to stay. The spirit presence of the deceased son of the former tenants, whom the family is renting the house, serves to guide Katie Boland, who now lives in his very bedroom, and puts on his clothes in remembrance in an attic scene. He serves to take the guilt away from his own grieving mother, to allow Katie Boland to understand her love to her mother must be self-less, and to let us know that science cannot save us, because it is God that only knows the hour and the place we are called. The movie has scenes of teenage discovery, but they are portrayed with tact and innocence that most Catholic / Christian families will be comfortable with. The movie puts things before us, and lets us decide whether chance, or faith. It is not heavy-handed, but is gentle in its scenery, plot, acting, and cast. The movie would do well to view with faith formation adolescents, followed by discussion of what could be God's blessings, the act of just going through motions and the result of being selfish with career goals and opposing views. Many of this cast went on to other films and projects, but this memorable movie lets us watch them in such peaceful, unrushed, down to earth roles. I truly believe this was Nadia Litz's shining moment on screen as Helen, that is only challenged by her role in the movie "Monkey Wars". Her steadfastness and unflappable rebuttal to the mother's charge as the Bible being fiction, "I disagree..." is done with a strength, politeness, and tact that all Catholics / Christians could learn from. I had watched this movie several times on streaming video channels, had rented it from Netflix, but finally knew it had to be included in my keeper collection. It carries timeless messages, and is a staple movie when company comes over. "Some Things that Stay" is identical to "Run Away Home", even the covers seemed to trade-off graphics in the marketing.
