À propos de ce produit

Product Information

Acts of martyrdom have been found in nearly all the world's major religious traditions. Though considered by devotees to be perhaps the greatest expression of religious faith, martyrdom is also one of the most difficult concepts for modern observers of religion to understand. This is especially true in the West, where martyrdom has all but disappeared and martyrs in other cultures are often dismissed as fanatics. Cormack seeks to foster a greater understanding of these acts by explaining how martyrdom has historically been viewed in the world's major religions. She provides the first sustained, cross-cultural examination of this fascinating aspect of religious life.

"These essays reveal how martyrdom has served and continues to serve religions in a variety of ways, allowing for cultural accommodation and assimilation in the case of Christian martyrs in Rome while at the same time fomenting various forms of internal religious debate in both Hindu and Islamic cultures."-- Comitatus, "These essays reveal how martyrdom has served and continues to servereligions in a variety of ways, allowing for cultural accommodation andassimilation in the case of Christian martyrs in Rome while at the same timefomenting various forms of internal religious debate in both Hindu and Islamiccultures."-- Comitatus, "These essays reveal how martyrdom has served and continues to serve religions in a variety of ways, allowing for cultural accommodation and assimilation in the case of Christian martyrs in Rome while at the same time fomenting various forms of internal religious debate in both Hindu andIslamic cultures."-- Comitatus, These essays together offer the reader a sense of the ways in which martyrdom distinguishes religions from one another. The seller sent a copy of this antique book that was different from that pictured in the listing and which was in significantly worse condition than pictured. When I complained they offered to let me return it. However, it's a $10 book and the time and cost of returning it are not worth it. They ignored my follow up complaint and request. Most of the good used book sellers on ebay offer partial refunds in the same situation so I'll stick with them and not use this seller again.
