Your $50 "Burr" grinder isn't the real thing..
So you bought another $50 "Burr" grinder and somehow it's hardly better than your $20 blade grinder? That is because it isn't a true conical burr. This one will deliver consistent grinds. My old Krups machine pretty much didn't yield consistently sized grinds. Coarse grinds yielded cloudy cold brew due to fine particles in with the coarse. This machine on the coarsest setting makes perfect cold brew with almost zero sediment. I used to have filter the cold brew after brewing with the Krups. As the entry model, you get no frills, but excellent performance with the encore. I love that you set the grind on top, so it's easy to see the setting. Hard to forget that you're dialed in for espresso when you are making cold brew, etc. Slower grinding, with no digital display, timer or scale, but ... Just a beginner
Great quality product. This is my first time preparing fresh ground coffee for my French press. A little bit of extra time spent for a great cup of coffee. Was disappointed that I had to go on line for a manual but it just shows I'm old school. As a retiree I'm so glad I now have the extra time to pamper myself in this way. I made the mistake of trying to work it before reading the manual. BIG MISTAKE. I clogged the grinder and spent unnecessary time cleaning it. After that, I had no problem. READ THE MANUAL. Good, but clogged on the first grind
The first time I used it it worked great. Set the grind for 12 for an aeropress, and it seemed to do a good consistant grind. The second time I tried to grind, it would not work at all. Originally I thought it was broken, but it turns out the output shoot was completely clogged. I couldn't reach it with any of the supplied tools, so i had to stick a butter knife up there and free the clog. After that, I cleaned the entire machine again and it began working.The first time I used it it worked great. Set the grind for 12 for an aeropress, and it seemed to do a good consistant grind. Very happy with product
The only aggravating thing about this grinder is the silicone gasket. Not easy to get into place, but once I heated it in hot water I was able to get it properly positioned. Otherwise I am extremely happy with this burr grinder.

Excellent basic grinder and superb after sales service
This is an excellent grinder for the price and Baratza gives the best after sales service of any company I've ever dealt with. The employees seem like coffee fanatics which is what you want with a product like this. The Encore is simple and basic with the focus is on quality burrs and other good mechanical components, not on fancy timers, scales or digital displays. Baratza has those on it's pricier grinders. It has 40 grind settings from talcum powder to ultra course. Those who say it won't grind fine enough for espresso have a problem with their machine, most likely because the little plastic tabs on the burr holder have broken off - those are designed to break off in case a rock or an un-roasted bean gets in there which would otherwise damage the burrs. When the tabs break off you lose ... This is an excellent grinder for the price and Baratza gives the best after sales service of any company I've ever dealt with. When the tabs break off you lose the ability to adjust the grind and the gap between the burrs opens up by itself. A new burr holder is available from Baratza for $4 and it's an easy fix - the instructions on their website are excellent. Any part that could break or wear out is available on their website for surprisingly low prices. If you don't want to tackle repairs by yourself they will do it for you, again, very reasonably. There is also a somewhat secret upgrade to the Encore where you can upgrade the cone burr to their M2 burr normally found in their higher end but discontinued Virtuoso and Preciso models. I have not done the upgrade but it apparently increases grinding speed and improves grind consistency. At $35 it's not a super cheap upgrade but something I recon I'll try if it produces a better espresso. Bottom line, if you want a good, no frills, high quality grinder for the lowest price possible, this is the one to get. If you're tempted to spend less on another brand you should probably think again. Or if you're handy and you find a deal on a used Encore, you know you can fix the thing with all the inexpensive available parts.
