Product Information

An less-well-known Vietnam War picture with an interesting point of view formed while memories of the war were still fresh. Lancaster plays a tough U.S. military advisor in 1964 assigned to the abandoned French outpost of Muc Wa, where he must assemble a platoon out of inexperienced American soldiers and hardened Vietnamese mercenaries. As he the conditions at first hand, his doubts about the U.S. involvement grow.

Low Budget Block Buster?
Interesting film especially when one considers this was a low budget flick. First let me preface my remarks by letting the reader know why I bought this DVD in the 1st place. I was looking for examples of early Vietnam US Army uniforms, equipment, and weapons. Based on my research, this movie was very accurate from the uniforms, to the weapons, to the equipment. Even the helicopter was accurate for the time period. There were no Hueys and no M16s back then. Much of the gear and weapons were WWII or Korean War vintage. So I am very happy with this film from this standpoint. In terms of the story itself,+ I really did enjoy it. The frustration experienced by the US Army advisors as depicted in the movie seems to be spot on and echoed in books (Lost In Translation) and other movies ... Even my father complained of the very same things when he was an advisor in 1962-1963. The ARVN seemed unmotivated, the Montagnards were ill equipped and the mercenaries were undisciplined. Most important is the fact the US Army seemed to be destined to repeat the same mistakes that the French made earlier. There are things I didn't like. First, the sound track was something from a 70's made for TV movie or a 70's TV series like Mannix. Next, some of the battle scenes fell short in terms of scale. It always looked like just a small handful of Viet Cong were attacking at any given time and all the major battle scenes were filmed at night. I wish that this movie had been made with a budget that equaled Oliver Stone's Platoon or Coppala's Apocalypse Now. From a political perspective, the story of Go Tell The Spartans is so much more meaningful and important than those of the bigger budget blockbusters. I also wished the movie had been made later. When it was done in the late 70's, the nation was not interested in exploring why we failed in a country thousands of miles away. I think collectively, the nation just wanted to forget and it wanted put this ugly chapter behind us.

Follows the defeat of French in indo china,refers to the battle between Sparta & Persia.
Acting was on par for the era the movie was made. Actors were a little dry in their delivery, but movie had a good story line.

Interesting film late in Burt Lancaster’s career.
Don’t know how much this film reflects the true attitude of the GI’s advisors in Vietnam during those first years. I have my doubts.

Go Tell the Spartans
Go tell the Spartans, thou that passest by, That here, obedient to their laws, we lie. This movie has nothing to do with the Spartans, but the ideas that placed us in Viet Nam after the failure of France to acheive a victory there. The story takes place prior to the actual commitment of major troop numbers. Had it not came out at the time that it did I am sure it would have done better and been more memorable. As it is the work is the last major work of a once major actor, Burt Lancaster. The message is clear and subject to interputation to some degree. Those who oppose war will get the justification for that opposition. Those who believe in what John Stuart Mill had to say in 1862 will see that meaning. Pop the popcorn, open a cool one of your choice and really just enjoy the film. ... Go tell the Spartans, thou that passest by, That here, obedient to their laws, we lie.
