Product Information

Soon to be a Showtime limited series starring Ethan Hawke and Daveed Diggs Winner of the National Book Award for Fiction From the bestselling author of Deacon King Kong (an Oprah Book Club pick) and The Color of Water comes the story of a young boy born a slave who joins John Brown's antislavery crusade--and who must pass as a girl to survive. Henry Shackleford is a young slave living in the Kansas Territory in 1856--a battleground between anti- and pro-slavery forces--when legendary abolitionist John Brown arrives. When an argument between Brown and Henry's master turns violent, Henry is forced to leave town--along with Brown, who believes Henry to be a girl and his good luck charm. Over the ensuing months, Henry, whom Brown nicknames Little Onion, conceals his true identity to stay alive. Eventually Brown sweeps him into the historic raid on Harpers Ferry in 1859--one of the great catalysts for the Civil War. An absorbing mixture of history and imagination, and told with McBride's meticulous eye for detail and character, The Good Lord Bird is both a rousing adventure and a moving exploration of identity and survival.

  • Harper's Ferry with John Brown and "The Onion" is an adventure to remember!

I bought this book because I had read an intriguing review in our local newspaper. I am so glad I did. This was a completely original take on an old subject and gave me a different view of the entire incident at Harper's Ferry. It was a totally unexpected experience. There was no romance or sex (although prostitutes abound), plenty of violence...but not for its own sake. It was a thoughtful book. Sometimes I felt we were stuck and would never move from one place to another. But taken all together, this inveterate reader loved it.

  • Please watch and read this the mini series and book. Your life will be enriched for having done so 🥰🥰🥰

The book is AMAZING👏👏👏👏 I read it on line then wanted my own hardback copy. I watched the mini series on Showtime several times then bought the mini series so I can rewatch it and I do. Ethan Hawke is out of this world good at playing John Brown. I’m going to watch every movie he has played in and read all his books he has written and any movie he has directed. Ethan Hawke is my favorite actor who has ever lived.
