North Platte, Nebraska, is as isolated as a small town can be, a solitary outpost in the vast midwestern plains, hours from the state's urban centers of Omaha and Lincoln. But from Christmas Day 1941 to the end of World War II, a miracle happened there. During the war, American soldiers from every city and walk of life rolled through North Platte on troop trains, en route to their ultimate destinations in Europe and the Pacific. The tiny town, wanting to offer the servicemen warmth and support, transformed its modest railroad depot into the North Platte Canteen -- a place where soldiers could enjoy coffee, music, home-cooked food, magazines, and convivial, friendly conversation during a stopover that lasted only a few minutes. It was a haven for a never-ending stream of weary, homesick military personnel that provided them with the encouragement they needed to help them through the difficult times ahead. Every day of the year, every day of the war, the Canteen -- staffed and funded entirely by local volunteers -- was open from 5 A.M. until the last troop train of the day pulled away after midnight.     Clever and accurate

    Absolutely terrific book on a subject near and dear to my heart. My husbands father was drafted to serve in WWII, and took this exact train route to get to the SW Pacific. Given the time frame, we are certain that he passed through this little town, and experienced their collective kindness. This is a very well written account of an important, little known, massive effort by many wonderful folks.

    Once Upon a Town By Bob Greene

    This book tells an amazing story of the townspeople of North Platt, Nebraska during WWII. With the assistance of others in nearby towns (some a couple of hours or more away) They made it their mission to meet every train, every day (over twenty trains each day)every year of WWII. They served them banquets of food and drinks and sent them off with more to have on the way. You have to read it. It will touch your heart and make you cry. Grown men who were interviewed for the book would cry fifty years later as they recalled the warmth and caring these townspeople gave to millions of military who served during this time and continued as they returned home on the trains even after the war was over.     Once Upon a Town

    I bought the book to learn more about the North Platte Canteen. I had heard bits and pieces about the Canteen and was interested in finding out more. It was informative from what the author learned from the current towns people and what he got from the interviews from the ladys that had worked there and the many military men who had stopped at the canteen. There was a lot of reserch to find the men who had been at the canteen. I thought it was a very good and informative book.

    Once Upon a Town

    This book was on my "intend to read" list since it first came out. I saw Bob Greene interviewed at that time. My Dad was in WW II and probably went through North Platte, Nebraska and may have had contact with these people. This is the most heart-warming book I have read in a long time. I bought it on Kindle, read it, and then bought the hard cover book so I can loan it to people (and get it back). This is the story of a group of people, in an area of a state, who gave, not knowing for how long it would be, and never asked for anything in return. When it was over, these people went back to their lives. Other areas of the country could have done what these people did, but these people did it. Maybe others did what these people did, but no one wrote about it.
