Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) has just awakened. He doesn't know who he is or where he is. He has just been pulled out of the Mediterranean south of Marseilles, and he had two 9mm bullets in his back. He is on a fishing trawler. The captain removed the bullets and a lazer tag from his shoulder containing banking information. He remembers how to do everything, he can speak different languages, play cards. . .but he can't remember his name or anything at all about his identity. Two weeks later they dock in Marseilles, and the captain gives Jason some money and wishes him luck. He travels to Zurich, and the bank, trying to remember anything and searching for information. He opens a safe deposit box and finds a lot of money and several passports, all with his face, and different names and ... Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) has just awakened. He opens a safe deposit box and finds a lot of money and several passports, all with his face, and different names and countries. There is also a gun which he leaves. He is AWOL to his superiors, and suddenly people are following him and he is forced to defend himself, which to his surprise, he is very good at. Taking refuge in a U.S. Embassy, to elude followers, he is suddenly thrust into a major confrontation. He narrowly escapes, and offers $20K to a girl, Marie, he saw inside the embassy, to drive him to Paris. She accepts and their sojurn begins. Jason gets some sleep along the way, and tries to explain to her that he has no memory, and doesn't know the people who are after him, or why. When they get to Paris, they go to the address on his passport. Almost instantly, the same people are there. He fights the guy and tries to gain information, but the guy kills himself first. Now on the run, from the Paris police, and his handlers, he is trying to figure out what is going on. Eventually, he figures out that he is an assassin. He has no memory prior to waking up on the fishing boat, but he must face the truth. Everywhere he goes, his pursuers show up. Numerous assassins are after both him and Marie. She is terrified, but he convinces that if they split up, she is dead. Finally he decides that this running just won't work. He must go after them and put a stop to this. After killing another assassin who came after him and Marie, he uses the guy's equipment to back-track and get to the group running "Treadstone", the name given to Jason by the dying assassin. He sets a meeting over the phone, but uses it to track the people back to their headquarters. He is extremely skillful, very much like a modern James Bond; there is nothing that this guy can't do! He tries to get information on anything that he can, and although his memory just won't return, he finds out that his worse nightmares are true. He is some kind of killer, and that he was on an assignment when shot, and now they just want to kill him to make it all go away. In a major fire-fight he kills almost everybody, and manages to get away. His superior, who was running Treadstone, steps out into the street and another assassin shoots him. Treadstone is shut down. This is the first edition of the Bourne Trilogy. The action is great, and Bourne's maneuvering skills are nonstop. He is a human machine! Damon and Potente (Marie) make a good pair, and become believable as they both try to figure out his predicament. In the end of this film, they manage to disappear in the south of Spain.

Purpose of the film
I’ve known of the Jason Bourne trilogy for well over a decade. Yea, I know there was a fourth, without Matt Damon, and a fifth one with him in it. The entire trilogy, from the first edition, The Bourne Identity, to the final one must rank among the very best action films. It was a thrilling experience, it gripped your attention from start to finish, the plot didn’t wander, it was easy to follow, Damon was fantastic in his role, the support cast was terrific and the stunts were performed by actual stuntmen rather than computer productions. The Bourne Identity was as impressive as two which followed. Like a great novel, just didn’t want it to end.I’ve known of the Jason Bourne trilogy for well over a decade. Joan Allen and David Strathairn are excellent as two battling CIA directors, and Julia Styles pops up for a small but important turn as Bourne's former government contact. Matt Damon continues to give Bourne the perfect mix of tough guy determination and sad-eyed desperation, and despite his physics-defying fists, he never comes off as the invincible super hero. Rather, the appeal of Bourne remains in his humanness--he feels pain, bloodies his knuckles, and mourns the loss of his lover. It's this emotional and physical vulnerability that keeps you on the edge of the seat, holding your breath for him. Well, that and the totally awesome fight scenes, of course.
