An heroic life gets a suitably dramatic retelling in George Tillman, Jr.'s docudrama MEN OF HONOR, based on the true story of Carl Brashear, the first African American to become a United States Navy master diver. The film employs the conventional yet pleasurable against-all-odds narrative. Carl Brashear (played with noble grace by Cuba Gooding Jr.) is the son of a degraded Southern sharecropper. Determined to succeed in the vocation he believes he was born for, Brashear enlists in the navy. Once there, however, the determined young man finds his dream inaccessible--thwarted by the forces of institutional and personal racism. When, after a long and difficult struggle, he is finally allowed into diving school, he finds himself under the authority of Billy Sunday (Robert De Niro), a former master diver whose injured lung has left him permanently above water. Sunday becomes simultaneously Brashear's most vicious adversary and most loyal supporter, motivating him to succeed. The story that follows is a highly emotional wave of ups and downs: Brashear overcomes one barrier only to be met by the next, even larger one. MEN OF HONOR is at times heartbreaking and painful to watch, but the triumphant ending makes for a deeply satisfying payoff.

A Rare Caption of the Human Spirit!
This movie is a must in my movie collection. A peice worth seeing time after time and analyzing part by part, piece by piece. The quality performance made by Gooding Jr. and Diniro are at the height of expressing the moment which all finds us to answer the question of how we will respond to life's pinnacle turning points and our willingness to welcome struggle, and challenges POSITIVELY and OPENLY without returning hatred, that will literally alter our human spirit to an ever rewarding level. (A good and healthy way to break the cycle of hate.) A delicate balance. Literally changing us upward forever and becoming the living example of POSITIVE STRENTH for young and old to follow suit in their own lives to touch others as well. In Gooding's character I see him drawing his strength from God and holding on to preserving the benefits for humanity, love of family and knowing first hand that the goal is to stay clear of dead end roads and to believe in taking a chance worth fighting for for basic survival day to day and spiritually. It is quite unhealthy and dehumanizing to box in and shut light out of another person, but with strength and determination and pureness of heart in desire to overcome, can always turn ill intensions of one and be made into the light, for the darkness of another and directly for your oposers (reguardless of who or how). Just by shear example at the least. A FIVE STAR QUALITY FILM FOR THE ENTIRE HUMAN SPIRIT! :-)

But it is Sunday who ultimately helps Brashear, the son of a Kentucky sharecropper, overcome a crippling injury, fight racism and bureaucracy, and make military history. Cuba Gooding Jr. delivers a credible, engaging performance. Robert De Niro and Cuba Gooding Jr. are eminently watchable. One Of the Best Movies I've Seen In A Long Time
I purchased this for my daughter, she kept raving about it. Of course I watched it with her. I must give this movie 5*****. Although it was made in 2001, I just recently watched it. It was WELL beyond my expectations. The plot and cast were simply outstanding. There is lessons to be learned in this movie. It is heart warming, encouraging and will remind anyone who watches it the importance of strength, determination and the ability to overcome any obstacles. "Things are not always what they seem"...so true! If your looking for a GREAT movie, this must be one of them. The Best!
Awesome movie based on a true story of the first African America Master Diver in the US Navy that was an amputee... Very well acted with lots of good visual effects... The DVD has many extras including and allenate ending....

Wonderful and Inspiring
This is such a wonderful movie. I had my 13 year old grandson watch this to see that a man of honor can do anything if he has the TRUE DESIRE!! My wish is that every teenager would watch this movie. They see all the movies about death, driving fast, drugs and dumb kids doing crazy things. It would be fabulous for them to watch a movie that would inspire them to Greatness. The story (based on truth) is entertaining, thought provoking and uplifting. The acting is primo!!!! GREAT MOVIE FOR MEN, WOMEN AND TEENS.This is such a wonderful movie. I had my 13 year old grandson watch this to see that a man of honor can do anything if he has the TRUE DESIRE!! My wish is that every teenager would watch this movie.
