Reviews
'Susan Irvine's new edition of seven of the Belfour pieces ... is greatly to be welcomed. ... In it we have a much improved text, better laid out and punctuated, and cleansed of Belfour's occasional inaccuracies and the apparently meaningless but very frequent acute accents with which themanuscript text is sprinkled ... this edition is a model of exactitude and responsible scholarship.'D.G. Scragg, University of Manchester, Review of English Studies, Vol. 47, No. 186, May '96, 'a very fine work, bringing these texts to the attention of scholars in a very full, helpful edition, which will be most welcome to all those working in Old English.'Anglia vol. 113 No. 2, 'Irvine's treatment is a clear distillation of intricate matter, admirable in summarizing those things needful to know, particularly about Aelfric and the various authorial and scribal versions of his works. The undoubted strength of this strong edition, however, is the treatment of the sevenindividual pieces. Irvine's edition is yet another indication that Old English prose has moved from second-class status in Old English studies to the prominence it deserves in scholarly inquiry. In turn, the edition will likely inspire further research, sustained as those efforts should be by theexample of this excellent work.'Paul E. Szarmach, Western Michigan University, Speculum - A Journal of Medieval Studies, Jan 1996

Synopsis
The edition presents seven Old English homilies from Oxford Bodleian Library Ms Bodley 343. The manuscript was written in the late twelfth century, but the homilies edited here were all composed over a century earlier. They are all unique to Bodley 343, and have not been edited since the 1909 edition of A.O. Belfour (EETS OS 137), which supplied only a text and translation. Four of the homilies are by AElfric, three are anonymous. The edition includes a general introduction discussing the composition of Bodley 343 and its relation to the various lines of transmission identifiable in Old English manuscripts. It also discusses the language of the homilies, of particular interest owing to its transitional nature. Each homily is preceded by a separate introduction describing its background, contents, and relation to sources and analogues. Latin sources are printed beneath the text and a glossary covering all the homilies is provided., The edition presents several Old English texts from an Oxford manuscript. The works are unique to this manuscript and have not been edited since 1909 (when only a text and translation were supplied). Four of the texts are by the important late-tenth-century writer AElfric, the other three are anonymous. The edition offers detailed information about the manuscript, its language, and the background, sources and analogues of the individual works., This edition presents several Old English texts from an Oxford manuscript.
