Terry Gilliam populates this labyrinthine, apocalyptic film with twisted characters and eerie revelations. The film was shot primarily in Philadelphia; Gilliam uses the more dilapidated area of the city to the film's apocalyptic advantage. The film is based on the 1962 French short film LA JETEE.

Not exactly The 12 Monkeys I saw in 1995
I am pretty sure that the 12 Monkeys version I saw on the big screen in 1995 is different from this DVD release. But then it was a long time ago for me. And this story is about time travel in one of its grittiest tellings. I give it a thumbs-up. I am biased towards Terry Gilliam's movie making but I do not consider myself one of his of his devotes. Pros: Very good acting by everybody. Good pacing of the story but due to editing it requires more than one viewing to connect the dots. This DVD, the 1998, Collector's Edition is very good in the extra features that include a lengthy story of the making of the movie. I think it might be better to watch that before viewing the movie. Cons: It's R-rated but not for sex or excessive foul language or nudity. There are very brutal, ... Pitt and Willis are AWESOME
Pitt and Willis are AWESOME in Twelve Monkeys. It's a Great Sci-Fi film!!! Bruce Willis is spectacular in this futuristic thriller. Twelve Monkeys is about a scientist who goes back in time to try and stop the release of a toxin in the air that caused the demolition of man kind. Bruce Willis is the main character but the supporting cast is so superb that even if Willis was replaced with a chimp this movie still would've rocked. Brad Pitt throws down a spectacular performance as the leader of an enviromental group known as the 12 Monkeys. Overall this is one of my favorite Sci-Fi films of all time, it's innovative, creative, and tons of fun. I didn't like this movie the first time I saw this back in '96, but after watching it a couple years ago I had to buy it, and now I watch it ... Pitt and Willis are AWESOME in Twelve Monkeys.
