THE DRESSER is Peter Yates's intriguing look behind the scenes of a touring stage company in war-torn England, based on Ronald Harwood's hit Broadway play. Albert Finney stars as Sir, the aging manager and lead actor of the troupe who begins to come undone from the pressure of touring in bombed-out England. The lines between reality and drama begin to fade, leading Sir into melodramatic ramblings, soothed only by the aid of his devoted dresser, Norman (Tom Courtenay). Norman is part lover, brother, mother, and whipping boy to Sir's mercurial moods, coaxing the egocentric actor through the necessary dressing-room preparations as he readies himself for his 227th performance of KING LEAR. Norman is the backstage glue that binds the troupe of eccentric actors together, calming bruised egos and demanding respect for their aging and slightly delusional leader. In true theatrical form, the show must go on, and as bombs fall on England's finest theaters, Sir leads his troupe through another command performance of Shakespeare's tragedy. This beautifully filmed love letter to the theater is a must for anyone who enjoys fine drama. The film features an outstanding ensemble cast, especially Tom Courtenay, who is a revelation as Norman, giving a deeply inspired and heartfelt performance.

This film is a rare treasure indeed . . . Not only the tour de force performances by Mr. Finney and Mr. Courtney respectively, but also in it's cinematography, haunting score and the brilliance of Ronald Harwood's play, based upon his own backstage experiences as a personal dresser to the legendary Donald Wolfitt; Shakespearean actor whose portrayal of King Lear was a hailed favorite in the English theatre during the early 20's and late 30's. Like the musical 'Cabaret" It is the perfect Valentine, perhaps even a eulogy for the demise of a grand tradition that falls prey to the clutches of war. The fact that the evening's performance of 'King Lear' is by no means an accident. . . one could not ask for a more poignant and modern interpretation of Shakespeare's classic tragedy. As Lear ... As Lear lost the command of his kingdom and senses, so does Albert Finney in his role as 'Sir' - the head of struggling Shakespearean troupe caught in the throes of war torn England during the blitzkrieg of the 1940's. Indeed, the king of this film goes mad - both onstage and off in this brilliant film as the characters of Shakespeare's classic tragedy come to life backstage in Harwood's marvelous parallel. The ghosts of 'Lear' are apparent - Oxenby, a disgruntled and slighted actor with designs of his own reflects the dastardly Edmund. The devotion of the young actress named Irene - a veritable Cordelia. Madge, the resident Stage Manager who captures the iron spirit of Goneril, Most importantly is 'Sir's backstage dresser: Norman, who plays every inch The Fool and his bag of tricks; conniving, designing, pleading, cajoling, calculating anything he can to keep his master happy, secure and sane in a world that is falling apart both literally and mentally. Mr. Courtney's performance alongside Mr. Finney is pure genius. This film is sheer delight for anyone who loves Shakespeare or theatre. A prized piece for one's personal library.

The Dresser
For anyone who likes Shakespeare, This is a must see movie. The acting is sfirst class and it gives a look at the trials of an acting company during the Second World War.
