This is a touching real life 1930's love story about the romance between Carole Lombard (Jill Clayburgh) and Clark Gable (James Brolin). New to Hollywood, Gable is trying to make it. He doesn't make a lot of money, so times are a little tough. He runs into Carole Lombard when one of her madcap stunts goes arrant and causes Gable to wreck his car. At this time, Carole Lombard is just about the most famous and highest paid comedian in pictures. He storms up to her and gives her a piece of his mind. This is how they met. Soon he gets a couple of good parts and he too a star. The studios want them to play opposite oneanother in an upcomming film, but they hate eachother. Forced to meet and make peace for the sake of the press and pose for pictures, their meeting erupts into a food ... This hostility progresses all the way up to the point of them realizing that they are in love. There is a problem though. Gable, although separated from his wife for a long time, is still legally married. Any type of news concerning an affair would surely be the end of both careers. They secretly have a relationship for a long time, but inevitably, the news gets out. They are both ridiculed and almost have their careers ended. But she loves him so much that she is willing to lose everything. He has tried to explain the separation from his wife, but she won't give him a divorce out of meanness. Both, willing to leave Hollywood, and their love publicly displayed, sway the tide of public sentiment towards themselves, and against his estranged wife. She gives in and grants him a divorce. Gable and Lombard are married and were together shortly. She was killed in a plane crash in 1942 while returning to Los Angeles from a defense bond sales campaign trip to Indiana. All 22 persons on board were killed. It is said that Clark Gable mourned her death until he died in 1960. This is a most envoyable film.

Behind all the hijinks, behind all the makeup, and behind all the coverups, Clark Gable and Carole Lombard had a wonderful love affair until her untimely death in 1942 raising money for war bonds during WW2. The movie tells the story well. Mentioning only 2 movies--"China Seas", which made Clark Gable a star--and "Gone With the Wind"--this 1976 movie concentrates on the relationship between the two stars. Carole Lombard (Jill Clayburgh) had already made it big when she met the struggling Clark Gable (James Brolin of "Marcus Welby" fame and the father of Josh Brolin and the husband and soul mate of Barbra Streisand). They fought big time at first, dumping salads and cake on each other, faking fist fights to create sympathy, and falling down stairs. But ... Mayer (Allen Garfield) reminds us of how Fatty Arbuckle and Mabel Normand were ostracized from Hollywood because of immoral behavior. Forced to sneak around in disguises, the couple arranged various hideaways but were always found by the media. Finally, when Gable is sued in a paternity suit by a Miss Watson, Lombard faces a dilemma. Does she sit it out or tell the truth that Gable was with her every night and confess to their immorality. Too bad this was pre-DNA. This movie is gorgeously photographed in 1930's style with music to match. The fancy cars are also fun to view and are authentic. This movie is a must to watch for anyone interested in the history of Hollywood. But unless you care about these two individuals, you will not like it. Red Buttons also co-stars as Ivan Cooper, Clark Gable's agent and helpmate to arrange all the hideaways and a front to the press.

Really, Ms. Lombard, better take a cold shower!
Who would have thought? I bought this film for my Mother, a real Clark Gable fan and someone who used to go see Ms. Lombard's films as a young girl. We enjoyed this film romance and knew quite alot about Mr. Gable but really very little about Ms. Lombard. She certainly was a sexual animal which was news to us! As a film, it was informative, moving, funny and bawdy.

They are a flattering couple - I wish she had lived longer. They were fun, risk takers! Media again ruins peoples lives. Media is a disgrace.

Wonderful True Love Story Well Worth Purchasing
I was introduced to the video by someone who had seen it before, and I totally agree this dramatization of a Hollywood romance, although it ended tragically, is well worth viewing again and again.
