Somewhere in Time (VHS, 1996)
Richard Collier (Christopher Reeve) is a playwright who while suffering writers' block, travels to the sea side to collect his thoughts. Passing by an old hotel, The Grand Hotel, he is suddenly drawn in and decides to spend the night. While waiting for the restaurant to open, he decides to take a little walk down Memory Lane in a room full of displays and memorabilia from the Hotel's history. Here he encounters an old picture of a beautiful actress, Elise McKenna (Jane Seymour), from 1912. He is thoroughly taken by her, but doesn't know why. Eight years earlier, at the opening of a play he had written as a senior in college. an old woman had approached him and given him a pocket watch, and she had bade him to return to her. Practically obsessed with the idea, he somehow has to try to return to her and be with her in 1912, where he feels that they had shared a moment in time. Through self hypnosis he transports himself back to 1912 where he meets her. She was an actress appearing in a play at the Grand. Here, they fell in love and shared a moment of bliss that was remembered for a lifetime, but separated by time itself. Only in death could their true love be shared "Somewhere in time". This was a sad movie and a truly beautiful love story. I believe that you will like this movie an d the musical score.

Just what could the world use right now? This movie!...Everyone stopping what they are doing and forgetting the strife. I know, I'm off the wall and all that, however... If you have a heart and a sense of what a true love story is all about, then go ahead, buy this popular movie by the late and courageous Chris Reeve, and get to understand the magnificent story. The music background takes you on a nostalgic trip back in time. Two lovers separated by about sixty years finally catch up with each other. But the romance is short lived as most are, and ends abruptly when a Lincoln cent reveals what year it is. Should time separate love? No. When sixty years in time show how much was truly lost, you couldn't fault Christopher Reeve's character for wanting to go back. Listen to that ... Just what could the world use right now? Somewhere in Time....the movie
With Christopher Reeves, it's the story of a man in this generation falling madly in love with an actress of the past, who died years before. His yearning for her leads him back in time where he struggles to win her love. He succeeds in that, but forces protecting the actress prevent their marriage, and when he returns to the present, he's very happy he had the chance to meet her and have his affair. You can't help wishing this were possible, and imagining how it worked to actually go back in time to accomplish a goal, but this story is also well written, great lines, well acted and worth while for every romantic in the world. I read the book first, and loved it, and then sought out the movie so that it all came to life for me. There were few changes in the movie, but they did not ... Great movie and purchased for my daughter and myself.
This is one of the greatest love stories even though there is a bit of dejuvue in it. The music in the background it part of what makes this movie so wonderful. The actors are great too. I sure do miss Christopher Reeves...I think just knowing he is gone now makes it even more special. He had such a future and it was just taken from him..that is life I guess. Anyway there is nothing I dislike about it..This is one of the greatest love stories even though there is a bit of dejuvue in it. Thought provoking film subject, akin to 'Time Machine'
Very well done romantic story with good performances by the 2 leading actors, especially Christopher Reeves who tragically is no longer with us.
