Product Information

A New York Times Top Ten Book of the Year and National Book Award finalist, Pachinko is an "extraordinary epic" of four generations of a poor Korean immigrant family as they fight to control their destiny in 20th-century Japan ( San Francisco Chronicle ). NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK OF 2017 * A USA TODAY TOP TEN OF 2017 * JULY PICK FOR THE PBS NEWSHOUR-NEW YORK TIMES BOOK CLUB NOW READ THIS * FINALIST FOR THE 2018 DAYTON LITERARY PEACE PRIZE* WINNER OF THE MEDICI BOOK CLUB PRIZE Roxane Gay's Favorite Book of 2017, Washington Post NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER * #1 BOSTON GLOBE BESTSELLER * USA TODAY BESTSELLER * WALL STREET JOURNAL BESTSELLER * WASHINGTON POST BESTSELLER "There could only be a few winners, and a lot of losers. And yet we played on, because we had hope that we might be the lucky ones." In the early 1900s, teenaged Sunja, the adored daughter of a crippled fisherman, falls for a wealthy stranger at the seashore near her home in Korea. He promises her the world, but when she discovers she is pregnant--and that her lover is married--she refuses to be bought. Instead, she accepts an offer of marriage from a gentle, sickly minister passing through on his way to Japan. But her decision to abandon her home, and to reject her son's powerful father, sets off a dramatic saga that will echo down through the generations. Richly told and profoundly moving, Pachinko is a story of love, sacrifice, ambition, and loyalty. From bustling street markets to the halls of Japan's finest universities to the pachinko parlors of the criminal underworld, Lee's complex and passionate characters--strong, stubborn women, devoted sisters and sons, fathers shaken by moral crisis--survive and thrive against the indifferent arc of history. *Includes reading group guide* p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 11.0px Helvetica; color: #1f4e79} span.s1 {font-kerning: none}

Reviews
"Astounding. The sweep of Dickens and Tolstoy applied to a 20th century Korean family in Japan. Min Jin Lee's PACHINKO tackles all the stuff most good novels do-family, love, cabbage-but it also asks questions that have never been more timely. What does it mean to be part of a nation? And what can one do to escape its tight, painful, familiar bonds?"-- Gary Shteyngart, New York Times bestselling author of Little Failure and Super Sad True Love Story, "In 1930s Korea, an earnest young woman, abandoned by the lover who has gotten her pregnant, enters into a marriage of convenience that will take her to a new life in Japan. Thus begins Lee's luminous new novel PACHINKO--a powerful meditation on what immigrants sacrifice to achieve a home in the world. PACHINKO confirms Lee's place among our finest novelists."-- Junot Díaz, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao and This Is How You Lose Her

  • Lightweight with great features and a lot of missed potential

    Very enlightening story about the Korean experience in Japan. A must read if you are interested on Korean and Japanese history. The only flaw is the time line, sometimes the author goes ahead into the future and we misses the oportunity to draw the evolution of the characters. As a reader you are left to fill the blanks. Overall, I would give it a B - but I will still recomend you to read it.

  • Very Informative (and Extensively Researched) Scholarly Presentation

    This literary work was a very scholarly and well researched piece. It was an embodiment of the author's own life experiences . It also enveloped and developed a view point of relations between a conquered colonial society and those who dominated and conquered the aforementioned group. The piece was a difficult read because it forced a self reflection. At times in this life, I guess I was born to suffer from different types of challenges. With time, we shall all see!

  • Very Well Written

    I don't normally read this type of literature as I more of an alphabet (CIA, FBI, EMP, etc.) kind of guy but with my wife being Korean, I thought that I would give it a try. The book is very well written and I pick it up to read as soon as I get home from work.

  • Awesome, what more can I say.

    English is not my first language but it wasn't difficult to read. Once I opened the cover, I couldn't put this book down till I finished it. What a sad but heart-touching story it was.

  • It was an excellent book if you favor reading Historical fiction, which I do.

    What I liked best about the story was the depiction of the Korean/Japanese situation both during and post WW11. It was very educational. What I didn't like about the story was their were so many deaths portrayed.
