Though the play in this PS2 version of EA SPORTS' perennially popular NHL 2002 is similar to that of the previous year's NHL 2001 inaugural release on the console, a few changes and additions help it to stand out from its predecessor. Top on the list of new features in this edition may be the "breakaway cam," which zooms in behind the breaking man and fades out the ambient noise of the crowd and other players, to provide an emotionally authentic one-on-one, do-or-die experience. This edition also brings the "NHL Cards" rewards system to the series. As in many contemporary console sports games, players can earn cards through skilled play, which can then be used to unlock special features. <br><br>As far as presentation goes, several animations have been refined and enhanced for a more realistic look. Players may stretch out to grab at wide passes or even kick the puck in line as they move out down the ice. New announcer Don Taylor joins veteran play-by-play man Jim Hughson to provide commentary. The EA GameStory feature hits the series in this edition as well, following notable plays and game developments and integrating interesting observations into the statistical displays and announcers' banter. As usual (since NHL 94), NHL 2002 is full licensed by both the National Hockey League and the NHL Player's Association and features all of the teams and updated rosters from the most recent (2000-2001) season.

A classic hockey game that deserves another look!!!
NHL 2002 A blast from the past. Players are blocky, and skate funny, but the gameplay is fast and furious. It's pretty easy to score, but who cares. This game is the first to add Don Taylor as a color commentator, and even though I love Don Taylor on Sportnet news, the phrase "Too much of a good thing" comes to mind. I really like the playing card addition to this game as well. The game allowed you to gain points for achieving certain goals, some easy Score a Hatrick some not so easy Accumulate 1000 assists over your career. You could unlock cool trading cards with player info on them, and you could also unlock a bunch of cheats. The ability to stack your team with every good player from the league, due to the minors system is funny, but not the greatest feature. This game allowed ... NHL 2002 A blast from the past. This game allowed you to have up to 80 players on your team 40 in the pros and 40 in the minors. Even though it's kind of ridiculous, it made the game easier for people who weren't very good. Final Verdict: 3/5 Rent or Buy?: Another classic, this one I'd actually recommend picking up in addition to NHL 06 or NHL 07. This game is really fun, and the trading card system is a blast. Old Time Hockey Fun
It was fun going back in time and playing the old players of the San Jose Sharks. The game tweaks are pretty basic when you compare it to the newer hockey games for PS2. The graphics are pretty good too and you can make out most of the players faces. The camera angle choices back then were few and far between. Either your close-up are really far away to see any detail. For what I paid for the game and era it came out, It was a fun skate down memory lane... Fun Hockey Game
I bought this game for my six year old son and he loved it. I played it too. I'm not a big fan of these Playstations, X-boxes, Nintendos, etc., because the games are hard to play. But this one, I actually caught on after about 15 minutes of playing. Nice graphics. I recommend it for the hockey fans.
