Product Information

THE HISTORY BOYS, a clever look at a British school system's attempts to produce Oxford and Cambridge-worthy graduates, is based on the play of the same title by Alan Bennett. Bennett's play provides an interesting springboard for a film about youth, growing up, education, identity, and the complexities of the student-teacher relationship. Set in Sheffield, England, in the early 1980s, the story follows a class of college-bound high-school boys as they prepare for the rigorous entrance exams. Feeling the boys need grooming beyond what the absurd Mr. Hector (Richard Griffiths) and sarcastic Mrs. Lintott (Frances De La Tour) can offer, the headmaster (Clive Merrison) brings in Mr. Irwin (Stephen Campbell Moore) to fill in the gaps. As a finishing school teacher of sorts, it becomes Irwin's job, through innovative history lessons and bold techniques, to turn children into men. But like his colleagues, Mr. Irwin is not without doubts and of his own, and his inevitable attraction to one of his students is something that he continually struggles with. Not what you'd expect from a film about teenagers, the story veers away from traditional notions of youthful rebellion, instead focusing on more mature issues of sexual orientation, life philosophies, and mortality. The film's cast of truly talented actors is headed by Richard Griffiths, whose performance as the tragically flawed yet loveable Mr. Hector forms much of the story's heart. Each student is played to perfection by young actors who include Samuel Barnett, Dominic Cooper, James Corden, and Russell Tovey. Filled with intellectual horsing around, rampant homosexual tension, and particularly lenient faculty, this day school appears to have little in common with the typical American high school. THE HISTORY BOYS should be especially refreshing to American audiences used to seeing adolescence exploited as it so often is in today's gross-out comedies.

  • Should be mandatory viewing for all teenagers

Tells a powerful story that the way to succeed in life is (after you have stuck to the curriculum) by doing so much reading 'around the subject' and reading in general that no exam flummoxes you. Whether written or oral. The erudition you have gained by your studying just shines through. If you do THIS much hard work, you may not even need to be particularly bright, given proper teaching making it plain that your free time will be spent doing all this work, you will succeed. The rest of your friends, who live second lives constantly on Facebook or twitter instead of studying what is important in life, will be satisfied attaining secondary or tertiary positions/occupations in life.

  • A VERY INTERESTING MOVIE TO SAY BY THE LEASE BY BRITISH

Those who hated their teachers and school, dislike theater, history and poetry shouldn't bother. Because it's so unique, British and yes, very talky, it's one of those films that wasn't widely promoted or seen. It's a shame. Some have said it's like "Dead Poet's Society" but not really. This goes much deeper showing students philosphically questioning their goals, fears and desires. It originally won a Tony for best Broadway Play and was transfered to film using the original cast. The "boys" are a group of talented diverse prep students vying to get into Oxford and Cambridge. Thematically it deals with teachers and how they choose to educate, imparting life lessons in some cases and showing how to beat the system and win in other cases. Richard Griffiths is remarkable as the old guard ...

  • Very entertaining.

I am from England so I particularly enjoyed this movie. It's very interllectual and I loved the fact that there are no sub titles when the boys are speaking French. I was surprised to learn that it was a hugely successful play before it was made into a film. The movie is upbeat and funny, even though one of the teachers is a sad old pervert. The boys take it all in their stride and are eager to attain high standards in their education. To be accepted into any Ivy League school, such as Oxford, is a great accomplishment, especially for kids who don't come from the best areas in the UK. Keep an open and liberal mind when watching this film, there are a couple of topics addressed that may be uncomfortable for some, and you will not be disappointed.

  • Th History Boys should be buried but not in History

I bought this video based on its preview from another movie but I could not finish watching it. The thought behind the storyline was a good idea but the overt sexual content was obscene and gross. If this movie was rewritten with the thought that one must look beyond the obvious or trained thought and expand the mind to see ideas from different angles - it would have been worthy to show my teenage kids as an example of complex thought. Instead, the movie focuses more on perverted, grotesque actions against young men who begin to accept it as a rite of passage to get a good grade from fat introverted professors with no friends.

  • English coming of age story based on hit play

If you really enjoy literature - you'll love this movie. The story follows eight English school boys being tutored to apply to Oxford-Cambridge. They manage to break out in song whenever they like, or quoting Bryon, Yeats et al at the drop of the hat. If you loved Dead Poet's Society, you'll eat this up. A little stagey in part, and the "boys" are looking old, the story is a celebration of everyone's favorite teacher. If you had one, you'll love this. -- Tina
