Product Information

Based on the Broadway show from the Damon Runyon short story and filled to the brim with Frank Loesser tunes such as "Luck Be a Lady" and "Sit Down, You're Rocking the Boat," this outrageously comic film featuring Marlon Brando's bold musical debut is a colorful tale about gamblers, a feisty Salvation Army lass, and a dance-hall girl with a pining heart. Veteran gambler Sky Masterson (Brando) takes a bet from Nathan Detroit (Frank Sinatra) that he can win the affection of a "soldier" (Jean Simmons) in the Salvation Army, setting himself up to lose both his money and his heart. Romance is the last thing the gambler and the missionary expect, and they fight against their attraction for all they're worth in glowing singing and dancing numbers. Love proves to be contagious as spicy dancer Miss Adelaide, in a role re-created for the screen from Broadway by showstopper Vivian Blaine, is determined to get her fiancé, Nathan, to the altar one way or another. Stubby Kaye and B.S. Pully also reprise their stage roles in this glorious Cinemascope film that earned four Academy Award nominations. GUYS AND DOLLS consistently ranks among the most popular film musicals of all time.

Marlon Brando's daring musical debut with "the voice of the century" co-star, Frank Sinatra (no less), turns out to be a hilarious comedy packed with Frank Loesser's songs that make for a superb musical romp. With some of the shrewdest gamblers in the Big Apple, who are counting ($) upon Nathan Detroit (Frank Sinatra) to set up the week's "Oldest Established Permanent Floating Crap Game in New York," Detroit's having difficulty raising the grand of cash that the place for the game costs. What's a gambler to do to raise fast dough? Entice someone into what seems like a sure bet! A gambling pro, Sky Masterson (Marlon Brando), accepts Detroit's $1,000 bet, waggering that Detroit can't schmooze a zealot Salvation Army Missionary Sergeant, Sarah Brown (Jean Simmons), into accompanying him to ... In order to do so, Detroit will have to seduce the Sgt.. Since the attractive Sgt. Brown's lacking sinners to covert at her local mission, a gambler's soul seems like a good enough challenge to save. Little does Masterson know how seductive the attractive Sgt. is capable of becoming. A twist the gambling veteran didn't foresee. Rather than setting up Detroit for a most likely loss, Masterson's about to become the loser of the bet, but a winner with the woman. Love is the furthest thing from either the Sgt.'s or master gambler's expectations. As Masterson & Brown resist being romantically drawn towards each other, the stage breaks out into some of the most well known song & dance numbers. Romance is in the air & catching as a divine dance hall girl, Miss Adelaide (Vivian Blaine), goes all out on a quest to get Detroit, her fiancé, to marry her. The songs that follow tell their story best. The film's musical numbers include: "Fugue for Tinhorns" (Sinatra), "Follow the Fold" (Simmons), "The Oldest Established" (Sinatra, Stubby Kaye & Ensemble), "I'll Know," (Simmons & Brando), "Pet Me, Poppa" (Blaine), "Guys and Dolls" (Sinatra & Stubby Kaye), "Adelaide" (Sinatra), "A Woman in Love" (Simmons & Brando), "Take Back Your Mink" (Blaine & the Hot Box Girls), "Adelaide's Lament" (Blaine), "The Crap Game Dance" (no vocals), "Luck Be a Lady" (Brando & Ensemble), "Sue Me" (Sinatra & Blaine), "Sit Down, You're Rocking the Boat" (Stubby Kaye & Ensemble) & "Guys and Dolls" (finale, Stubby Kaye & the Entire Cast). Nominated for 4 Oscars, "Guys and Dolls" didn't win any. But that has never dissuaded the public from having a 50+ year love affair with this classic.
