A Complete Anatomy of A Marriage--Audrey Hepburn is Magnificent!!
This 1967 movie, made when Audrey Hepburn was just 38 years old, is a great predictor of the marriages that we have today in 2011. It could be a current movie except for the dated fashions elegantly worn by Hepburn. Instead it is a classic. Albert Finney is Mark Wallace and Audrey Hepburn is Joanna Wallace. This is the story of their courtship, marriage, almost divorce, and reunion. The movie is somewhat confusing as it is shown in flashback along with the current story as it moves along. The purpose of the flashbacks was to show how happy the couple were when they were poor and unmarried and then how unhappy and conflicted they became once they were married for a while in the same locations in France. The flashbacks are easy to follow due to the changes in Joanna's hairstyles ... Initially, Mark is attracted to Jackie (Jacqueline Bisset), but when she and the other girls come down with chicken pox, he is left with only one that is well--Joanna. One of the funniest vignettes is when the couple endures a trip through France with another married couple--Cathy and Howard Manchester (Eleanor Bron and William Daniels) and their brat child Ruthie This was the beginning of the psychological movement where children were allowed to rule, and the idiocy of that is conveyed very well in the movie. Besides the story, the movie is wonderfully photographed and scored with music by Henry Mancini. It makes you want to go on a trip through France. There are some great quotes that are usable today: "You humiliate me, and you want to come back," and "Just becuase you're using a silencer doesn't mean you're not sniping." There are many more, usable for a marital argument. Additionally, there are many themes in the movie that recur. Watch particularly for the missing passport, hard boiled eggs, and defective car parts. Despite its irony and wonderful scenery and music, this movie has a serious side and is definitely a commentary on the decline of successful marriages that we know today.

Good description of an excellent 60's movie.
One of my FAV Albert Finney movies...miss seeing both him and Ms. Hepburn onscreen. They were consummate creators of their craft. Like new DVD, just like the title states!

A "REEL" CLASSIC
A REEL Classic. An essential movie. It was really good to find this and see it again. I think, and feel, you will be entertained and really enjoy this classic.

Not cute and cuddly, but real
If your are looking for a nice romantic comedy this is not it, however it is an excellent film on marriage. This story showing how two mismatched mates can make it work. You never quite know if they are going to make it or why it works, it just does. Audrey Hepburn is Audrey Hepburn, and Albert Finney does a good job playing a character that is hard to like even when you should feel sympathy for him. This is not a quiet nice in front of the fireplace, but it is a good movie.
