Product Information

William Wellman's BLOOD ALLEY begins with the inhabitants of a local Chinese village liberating political prisoner Captain Tom Wilder (John Wayne). The oppressed villagers are disillusioned by communism's stranglehold and want the former merchant marine to sail their ship through the treacherous Formosa Straits--the infamous Blood Alley--to Hong Kong and freedom. The Duke complies and heads off down the Yangtze aboard an old steamer, with Cathy Granger (Lauren Bacall) along for the ride. The strong arm of the plot is taken from the novel by Aaron Sidney Fleischman. Widescreen CinemaScope adds to the effective shots of the panoramic scenery, and it is an absolute delight to watch Wayne and Bacall, so reminiscent of Bogie and Hepburn in THE AFRICAN QUEEN.

Blood Alley (DVD, 2005)
Blood Alley is about an American being held in a Chinese prison for political reasons. John Wayne was a ship captain who was thrown into prison and had his ship taken. Now, a group of Chinese have broken him out and smuggled him to a small village where they want him to help them escape China. Here he meets Lauren Bacall, who is the daughter of an American doctor. She has been in China all of her life. The Communists have made life there almost unbearable, and with the exception of one family, all are ready to leave. This family is loyal to the communists and will have to be taken along too, just as self protection. Their escape vehicle is an old stern-wheeler riverboat built in America in 1884. It is used on the local river where the shallows prevent other vessels from operating. It burns wood an has a top speed of six knots. Their plan is to lure the government patrol boat into a trap and sink it. In an area where there is a constant fog, they plan to fake a fire onboard and a fake sinking, with only the smokestack remaining out of the water. All goes to plan and the entire village boards. Wayne who has knowledge of all the coastal shoals and coastline is supposed to pilot the lot to the safety of Hong Kong. Their desperate escape is dogged all the way by gunboats and other problems. The communist family wants to leave also, but the elder and some of his closest are intent to stop everybody. By poisoning the food and water, misery is shared by all. Eventually through good seamanship and a lot of luck, the entire lot is able to reach safety. This was a great movie.

John Wayne who talks to his baby who keeps him company, lauren becall, the daughter of a doctor breaks him out of prison, to travel through blood alley to rescue 300 people from communist china clutches. Along the way, we see the chinese navy try and sink the boat, but Wayne foils their plans, steals a boat, saves people along the way and send the rotten people back to where they came from! In the end of another great wayne film, there is but one outcome!
