A wonderful story told on a high quality media.
This is an excellent movie. It is a story of faith, courage and the occasional weakness and vanity of human men. I saw this movie for the first time on the night before my wedding, 51 years ago when the movie was new. Sadly my wife is no longer here to enjoy it with me. She passed away last Labour Day weekend. Maybe that makes the movie and the story more meaningful. The Pope in this story is almost a prediction of Pope Francis. I am not Catholic, but the story introduces us to characters who are not members of the faith. Perhaps I have gone to far with my evaluation of this movie. From a material view, the artwork on the case is beautifully done, the disc is crystal clear. But the true value is in the story, the primary reason for purchasing it.This is an excellent movie. A Must See!
The Shoes of the Fisherman has a great story line in which the College of Cardinals are sequestered in the Sistine Chapel to select a new Pope. When the white smoke rises from the Vatican, the whole world scrambles to learn who the new Pope is. Without revealing too much of the story, Anthony Quinn plays a recently-freed Russian political prisoner who has just become Pope Kiril Lakota. His work will be extremely difficult since he may be the only person in the world who can orchestrate a peaceful solution to a world poised on nuclear destruction. Excellent roles by Quinn, Oskar Werner, David Janssen, Vittorio De Sica, Sir John Gielgud, and Sir Laurence Olivier. I purchased this DVD because Vatican City exerts powerful influence on today's world, as in the past; and with ... I teach seminary classes and will introduce this DVD to my students. Since this movie was filmed in 1968, most of my students were not born when it was made. Catholics and non-Catholics will enjoy this DVD.

In the height of the Cold War with world tensions at critical levels, Kiril Pablovich Lakota (Anthony Quinn), Former Metropolitan Archbishop of Lviv is set free after twenty years forced labor in a Siberian labor camp in the Russian/Soviet gulag system. His jailer for these years, Pitor Ilyich Kamenev (Laurence Olivier), is now the premier of the Soviet Union. He is sent to Rome where the elderly Pope Pius XIIIelevates him to Cardinal in the title of St. Athanasius. When the Pope suddenly collapses and dies, the Papal Conclave of Cardinals convenes beginning the process of electing a new Pope. Now Cardinal Lakota is one of the electors. The favorites to be elected are both Italian Cardinals, Cardinal Leone, and Cardinal Rinaldi. After seven ballots, the election is still deadlocked. As ... As a compromise candidate, Lakota finds himself suggested by Cardinal Rinaldi, and is elected Pope by acclamation. Feeling himself not worthy of election, Lakota first refuses, but then accepts election, and takes the name Pope Kiril I. In the mean time the entire is on the brink of war over a border conflict between the Soviet Union and China, and a massive famine caused by U.S. trade restrictions against China that could cause the starvation deaths of 500 million Chinese. Soon after his election, Pope Karil I, with the help of his Papal valet and personal aid, Gelasio, sneaks out of the Vatican dressed as a simple priest. He just wants to explore Rome as a simple person. A few days later, Pope Karil receives a visit from a Soviet representative of premier Kamenev. This visit sparks a visit to the Soviet Union for a meeting with Kamenev who lays the problem on the line between the Soviets and the Chinese. The outcome of which surely means nuclear holocaust. Kiril realizes that unless the Church intervenes to avoid famine in China, the result could mean the end of civilization. He meets with Chairman Peng of China and pledges the entire resources of the Catholic Church to feeding China and averting famine and war. At his papal coronation, Kiril removes his tiara (in a gesture of humility) and states this intent, much to the delight of the crowds in St. Peter's Square below.

Best chance to walk with a Pope
Watch this, gather the family & sit around the TV, & learn about the Pope of the Catholic Church, whether or not you are Catholic, this movie is beautifully & accurately filmed. The storyline is often strained & dated, the ending is almost silly, but the power of love & the love of God is there. Very very worth watching, & owning to watch again, because it is a human story. Most movies are easy to review but I have tried to find an approach to this review. I give up & just say, Watch Anthony Quinn as the Pope, David Jansen as the reporter, and the Vatican as the setting, then you try to write a review. Because with all its faults, this film is hard to put down.Watch this, gather the family & sit around the TV, & learn about the Pope of the Catholic Church, whether or not you are Catholic, this movie is beautifully & accurately filmed. The Shoes of the Fisherman
This movie is one of the best of it's kind to hit the market in recent years. It is one that captures the imagination and is not only entertaining, but in many ways so realistic. I would recommend this one to everyone, regardless of their religion. The acting is super and the material matter keeps one on edge and involved with the story line.
