Great camera, superb picture quality.A++++. BUT, the following controls on the camera are poorly designed and prone to failure: #1. Flimsy External plastic Mic Holder. Mine broke where it is screwed into the base. This is not an issue because I use the supplied on-board mic ONLY for ambient sounds and attach external mics via the 2 xlr inputs. #2. Extremely poorly engineered Battery Release Button, will malfunction or fail (I use gaffer tape to seal it off). #3. Flimsy Eye Piece Release Clip. #4.Flimsy Tripod Mounting Hole. Be sure to fit tripod plates and a shoulder pad, it will make operation more comfortable. The good news is that none of these will affect the smooth functioning of the Camera. The Filter switch is another sore point, move it carefully to avoid moving to filter 2 when you intend to use filter 1. Apart from these flaws, the camera is rock-solid in performance and quality. Purchase with confidence, and enjoy years of trouble-free use.

The EX3 is one of the hardest working HD cameras of this new generation of camcorders, but its not for everyone. If you want run and gun docs, where hand held shooting is the technique of choice, then you will be better suited to buy the EX1. It is more compact, lighter while vertually the same camera as the EX3 on the inside. Not almost the same....exactly the same. So what's the difference and why is the EX3 3 thousand dollars more? Well the deal changer is the removable lens. This allow this camera to move into the world of independant films, nature photography, anything that requires special lens to get the job done right. Need that wide angle lens in the car for a movie shot, change the lens. Need to reach out and shoot the American Eagle high in the tree as she feed her eagle-ets, ... Another difference is the diopter. (viewfinder) They have taken the same high resolution screen and mounted it like a second big fat head bolted onto the side of the camera. While the first impression isn't the best, in that if you are running and gunning it is always in the way. Once you start using the camera in the field it earns your respect with its ability to perform in ways that the screen on the EX1 can't touch. Last, but not least, is the plethora of inputs and output added to the EX3. Sync, Time Code in and out (for jamsyncing multicameras), HDMI, and uncompressed HD. They are both excelant cameras. They just perform different jobs. Pick the one that fits your needs and you will fall in love.

A professional camera at an affordable price
The Sony EX3 is a perfect entry-level camera for the professional videographer. It has a wide array of features and options for every digital filmmaker's need. Though not as compact as the EX1, this upgraded version offers several additional features that make it superior for studio or field operation - including an interchangeable lens system, a greatly-improved shoulder mount, and a superior HD viewfinder. I will greatly miss the LANC remote plug from previous cameras I own but an assortment of powerful features and shooting formats more than makes up for the trade-offs in this upgrade.The Sony EX3 is a perfect entry-level camera for the professional videographer. Sony ex3 delivers
Impressed with the condition of the camera. I have used an ex3 before, and I have batts, changers, card reader, etc. Put it thru some initial tests and everything seems to work. The three toggle gain switch didn’t work when it arrived, but after some research, discovered a nefarious menu item that needed to be changed
