Art film for sure
I'm a big fan of people like Paul Giamatti. John Lithgow and Christopher Lloyd to name a few others. They can make any character come to life and are highly versatile. In "Cold Souls" Paul plays himself trying to come to grips with too much angst in his portrayal of a character in a Russian play. To relieve himself of the stress, he finds a company that removes souls. Skeptic yet undaunted, he gives the service a try and gets more than he bargained for. Now let me tell you how you'll feel about this film. This is an art film with an amusing twist, but none of the Hollywood hype will prepare you for the real drive behind the film. Many reviews I read of this film said it was "hilarious" and "funny". There are teeny, tiny moments when the slight (and I mean slight) absurdity of the premise ... Instead, if you come to this film with the intent of it being "interesting", you may walk away being mildly amused. DON'T look at it as a comedy, rather something "curious". Not for everyone, especially main stream. Which is why you never heard of it before. But if you like art house films and are looking for something different, you've found it. Something with not enough punch to make it at the box office, but something for the collector to add to his collection and watch once. If you don't fit this category, only proceed to buy it if you're the adventurous type. You MIGHT be surprised, who knows?

Cold Souls
Civilization and its discontents. Paul, an actor preparing for "Uncle Vanya" on Broadway, is mired in ennui. His agent tells him about an office where he can put his soul in storage. He does so then discovers that being soulless helps neither his acting nor his marriage; he returns to the office and rents, for two weeks, the soul of a Russian poet. His acting improves, but his wife finds him different, he sees bits of the borrowed soul's life, and he's now deep in sorrow. He wants his own soul back, but there are complications: it's in St. Petersburg. With the help of Nina, a Russian who transports souls to the U.S., he determines to get it back. Despite the heavy subject matter, an abundance of absurdity and wit make "Cold Souls" amusing as well as thought-provoking. Though the tone is ... Civilization and its discontents. The writing is solid, though the pacing is a little uneven, I felt the movie begins and wraps up a little too quickly. Overall "Cold Souls" is definitely worth watching.

The title "Cold Souls" does not prepare you for this uniquely funny look at souls.
Cold souls has a quirky sense of humor that only GIAMATTI could pull off. I have watched it numerous times. I am curious as to the soul business, now that A.I. can replace us . Watch it and think, while you also laugh.

Waste of time unfortunately
I bought this because i like Paul Giamatti. I had high hopes. We did not laugh once. It was slow and very boring. Really disappointing movie for us.

Cold Souls . . . A cold, dark comedy worth $8 or a rent
The best way to sum this movie up, is to say that it gives you the same feeling, and entertainment value as Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (Jim Carey, Kate Winslet) without the rewatchability. If you haven't seen it, then I can only describe Cold Souls as an actors "dramedy". Very good acting, with a plot/storyline that moves slower than you may like at first, but it keeps you hanging on until the end. You'll chuckle, go "Hum", but you won't need tissue for your eyes (no super sappy said scenes), or tissue for you underside (this is a subtle comedy/dramedy, you won't "lizz" - laugh till you wizz).
