Oscar nominee Joan Allen gives a remarkable performance in Sally Potter's YES, an extraordinary look at love and politics set in London, Belfast, Beirut, and Havana. Allen stars as an unnamed Irish-American scientist disillusioned with her marriage to Anthony (Sam Neill), who is more interested in his political job--and other women. Fed up with his affairs, she falls for an unnamed Arab cook (Simon Abkarian) and begins a torrid sexual relationship with him. A successful molecular biologist, she also puts her life under a microscope, but she is afraid to go after what she really wants. Meanwhile, her lover is much more open about the things he used to have when he was in Lebanon, reduced now to working in a British kitchen in order to barely survive; he comes to resent that she pays for everything in their romance, leading to tension and extreme situations. Writer-director Potter (ORLANDO) shows a sharp eye for the human condition and the fragility of love in this unusual and extraordinary film in which all of the characters speak in iambic pentameter. In addition to mixing in different styles, including slow motion, grainy shots, and freeze frames, Potter has a series of maids, especially the one played by Shirley Henderson, face the camera, reacting to what is going on around them. Henderson often addresses the audience, humorously pointing out that no matter how thorough people are, there is still always a little dirt to be cleaned up.

Unusual Voice
With her constant bright and clean visual style, the director has voiced an even more important message here and now. I heard the beauty in the ugliness that prevails today, and I heard humanity in all corners where it's been terribly overlooked. The performance of the actors is daring, too. The emotions flow into their lines and back to them. There's passion, there's dispassion, there's acute observation, and there's maticulate accusation. A beautiful, engaging, and very creative movie!
The language is beautiful, as if Shakespeare had written in modern language. It takes five minutes or so to get used to the iambic pentameter, but it is so worth it. GREAT actint, too!!!

Worth Seeing
I found this to be a powerful, fascinating film, layered with passion, diverse perspectives of life and an intricate blend of two strong individuals bound by love. Great acting and credible story line.

I saw this movie a few months ago and it has haunted me ever since. Sally Potter's film YES offers a refreshing departure from mainstream Hollywood fare. YES is a stunning study about human connection (and disconnection). At the core of the film is an unhappy marriage, resulting in partners who stray. Joan Allen finds a passionate man of like mind and begins a torrid affair with him, but soon the film is exploring their differences rather than what united them. The dialogue is mesmerizing, and maybe only a specific audience will appreciate the fact that the entire script is written in rhyming couplets - which sound so natural in the hands of these gifted actors that it took me 20 minutes to notice! Balancing the dramatic tension is the hilarious narrative by the maid of the household who ... I saw this movie a few months ago and it has haunted me ever since.
