Product Information

Preparing your child for kindergarten is easier with the literature-based “Before Five in a Row” by Jane Claire Lambert for ages 2 through 4. Popular with homeschool families due to the gentle nature of literature introduction and the ease with which it fits into other curriculum choices, “Before Five in a Row” gives parents the tools needed to build a good home library while introducing preschool lessons. The book is 149 pages broken down into two parts. The first part includes 24 book choices like “Goodnight Moon,” “Blueberries for Sal,” and “Corduroy.” Each chapter includes a short one- to two-sentence summary about the book followed up with activities that reinforce the story or enhance the learning experience. Activities involve discussion on certain aspects of the story, learning how the Bible fits into the reading, and hands-on activities like nature walks, baking bread, and picking vegetables. Using “Before Five in a Row” doesn’t require much planning as all of the ideas and preschool activities are laid out already, and all that is often required for learning is the story. Unlike the original “Five in a Row” written for older children, where students spend a whole week reading one book, “Before Five in a Row” lets you decide how long you want to row with a book. Spend a week, two weeks, or even a month on one book depending on how your child is learning and enjoying the curriculum. The author also includes other reading suggestions in “Before Five in a Row” to help expand your home library or further enhance the time spent on a particular subject. Older preschool children will have fun learning the core subjects like math, science, social studies, art, and music without even realizing that they are learning. “Before Five in a Row” integrates each subject seamlessly into the story ideas that your kids may be at, or above, grade level by the time kindergarten starts. Children will practice vocabulary, basic math skills like counting and sorting by shapes, and animal classification. “Before Five in a Row” includes older books that may not have the flashy illustrations of today’s stories, but these are the types of homeschool resources that introduce young children to a love of literature and stories they may not otherwise read. The second half of “Before Five in a Row” includes lessons and ideas to help with non-literature-based learning. The author gives you ideas to help with large and small fine motor coordination, routines for daily activities like brushing teeth and bath time, and basic school readiness ideas to ensure a seamless transition into kindergarten. The “Five in a Row” series can last an entire school year if both sections are implemented. “Five in a Row” and “Before Five in a Row” can stand alone as a reading curriculum or combine with other materials for a comprehensive reading and literature program for any grade up to eighth grade. If you want to add to your home library resources or just don’t have the time to create your own reading curriculum, then the “Five in a Row” series can help make your school year easier with well-organized story ideas and activities.

  • wonderful resource; if you plan ahead

This has so far become a treasured resource that encourages me and my children to gather daily around a meaningful book and read and learn together. I think Mrs. Lambert's techniques in drawing out aspects of each book have actually taught me to think in those categories for books not included in the series. One potential drawback is that, in our case, 1/3 of the books on the list were unavailable in our library system. However, we have been able to utilize the Inter-Library Loan system (which is FREE!) and, with a little patience, the books come in from other libraries around our state, etc. I find it fun to see where these books originate from, and it saves money to do this rather than purchase them all. I love Mrs. Lambert's suggestions in the appendix of the book on how to engage ...

  • Gentle introduction to children's literature

I highly recommend Before Five in a Row as a great way to introduce classic children's literature to the tiniest toddlers. There is so much to be gleaned from the curriculum. You can be creative and do so many activities. Also Pinterest has tons of ideas to add to it.

  • Fun ideas and content

I haven't made it all the way through this book with my little ones (ages one and three and a half), but so far, we have enjoyed the books and related discussions and activities. I love the ideas given, and reading this book makes me think of similar activities and discussions we can have with other books we own or check out from the library. Great starting point to get your children involved with and loving books.

  • Pleasantly surprised!

I hadn't heard of Five In a Row until a few weeks ago when I asked some fellow homeschooling mommies if they could recommend a preschool program for my autistic son. Overwhelmingly, the responses were Before Five in a Row. So I gave it a shot. The first thing that impressed me about this "curriculum" is it doesn't require expensive materials, nor does it require a purchase of lots of books (although that option is available). Most books are available through the library. This book is a practical guide for parents who want to introduce and instill a love of learning in their preschoolers. Before Five in a Row is geared toward ages 2 - 4. I have discovered great hands on projects that will keep my son engaged and interested. It's simple, too. Since Before FIAR is just one book, and an ...

  • Before Five in a Row by Jane C. Lamber

This book was recommended to me by two people. I was looking for something a little different and creative, yet structured for my preschooler. I really like this book for that reason. We are really into books in our family. I love how the author will take a classic children's book and break it up into different learning lessons from art to geography etc. It really opens up a whole new way of teaching that isn't just repetitious and boring to our kids. I would recommend this book for anyone who is going to home-school their preschooler.
