Product Information

This sequel to 2004's real-time strategy game from publisher Electronic Arts expands on the events depicted in New Line Cinema's film trilogy to incorporate scenes, characters, and battles found in J.R.R. Tolkien's epic fantasy saga. Fans will return to the besieged world of Middle-earth to actively participate in the War of the North, where dwarves and elves struggle to repel invasions in the Misty Mountains, Dol Guldur, Mirkwood, Rivendell, and other notable locales. Players will command one of six factions in a choice of game modes. Men, dwarves, and elves are pitted against goblins and the dark forces of both Isenguard and Mordor, with each faction offering its own technology, powers, buildings, and units to master. Battle of Middle-earth II includes good and evil single-player campaigns, a turn-based War of the Ring mode that involves conquering territory on a dynamic world map, and skirmish options for players to select maps, opponents, and starting conditions.

Though each mode offers something different, the core game follows established genre conventions in the building phase, where individual structures are purchased and erected anywhere on the land to generate various unit types. One distinguishing feature is that resource gathering is designed to be simple and self-sufficient, with the emphasis placed instead on battlefield tactics. Building the equivalent of a farm not only generates wealth, but it also increases the number of available command points to spend on units. The catch is that each farm has an efficiency percentage that diminishes the closer it is to another farm. On offense, players can order battalions and individual units to fight in specific stances or to march in different formations. Units will also level up, learn new skills, and become stronger over time. On defense, players can protect their base by freely building walls, guard towers, and gates.

Command points can also be spent on powerful heroes from the classic trilogy, such as Legolas, Gimli, and Boromir, or on custom warriors designed with the create-a-hero editor. Each hero can wield up to five character-specific powers to help him or her turn the tide in battle. In addition, all factions possess a series of racially derived powers to destroy, summon, or to provide bonuses. These abilities are purchased using power points, earned through combat by defeating enemies. Each faction's 12 powers are divided among three talent trees, with lower branches accessible only after acquiring top-tier powers. After players suffer defeat or emerge victorious, a detailed timeline will show statistics for units, structures, resources, and other pertinent information. For its Xbox 360 debut, the game includes new multiplayer options via Xbox Live, including hero versus hero, king of the hill, and capture and hold, as well as a streamlined control setup specifically designed for the console.

  • Those Poor Little Men!!!

The LOTR series has given gamers several different genres to play around with. Real Time Strategy has become one of the more interesting thanks to Battle for Middle Earth II. For the first time you can be practically any race you want to be and battle to decide the fate of Middle Earth. The single player will keep you busy for awhile but the real story here is the online multiplayer which will pit you up against other players in the world ready to stomp your armies into the ground so you better use the single player for practice a lot before you even think you can go out and dominate. Graphics are decent. Controls could use some work. It is hard to find the time to make a variety of different attacks when battle occur so quickly. But after enough practice you can get used to the learning ...

  • Game is really fun with Xbox Live and VoIP

Return to Middle-Earth with The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-Earth II for PC. In this sequel to the critically acclaimed The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-Earth, the focus shifts to the North. With 3 new factions –- Elves, Dwarves, and Goblins -- players lead their armies to victory, with the aid of new heroes, weapons. Based on battles that were hinted at in the Tolkien books and film adaptations, this jam-packed sequel offers 16 new campaigns and 40 skirmish maps, guaranteeing months of exciting gameplay. Protect the Elven city of Rivendell from an invading Goblin army. Make those meddling Hobbits pay and destroy the Shire. Pros: I've read many forums giving this game praise. I can't stress enough, if you're an avid RTS gamer or have played them in the past, You ...

  • Great game....

A lot of fun for any LotR fan, as well as for any RTS fan in the vein of Command & Conquer. Controls are good, graphics still look good, and the unique story campaigns only hinted at in the books make for a wonderful gaming experience. My favorite army would have to be that of the Dwarves, as theirs is defense-oriented. One can build a massive castle, or as I like to do sometimes, a maze of walls and upgraded defensive watchtowers, to keep the enemy at bay, as well as tunnels outside of the walls to pop out of behind the enemy! That said, there are more offensive armies (elves, goblins) and more balanced armies as well (Isengard, Gondor). The only army I missed from the first game was that of Rohan, but you can use their riders as Gondor. My only other beef was that the game can tend ...

  • Just allright

We had this game on the computer version and my boys loved it (it became my favorite game) we lost the cover (and computer code) and could no longer play the computer version. My youngest son (13 yrs old) wanted this version so he could play on the XBOX. I tried playing it twice - the control is not there like it was on the computer - the veiws wander too much and I cannot highlight a group and direct them like the computer - I have not played it since.

  • Bringing RTS to the console

LOTR: BFME 2 is an excellent RTS for the console. It was, for a long time, the best RTS on consoles, but has since then been replaced by Halo Wars. It was also the first console RTS to do it right. BFME 2 has pretty good controls and the gameplay is excelent. It takes a little more time to get used to than Halo Wars, but in the end it has more depth. It is a free build RTS (you can build pretty well anywhere on the map), with several heroes, powers, and factions (6). It can be enjoyed by new and competitive RTS gamers and there is still a big enough community to play with online. If you like RTS games, but don't have a computer, or just want to try one out on console, BFME 2 is a great taste tester that is sure to leave you satisfied and wanting more. However, Halo Wars is still double ...
