Cronos: 10th ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL EDITION
This film is the training ground for what has become one of the great movie makers in recent history. The concept for the movie is great - a man stubles upon a device that can give the "owner" eternal life (but at what cost?). Cronos has all of the themes del Toro like to work with (orphans, mystical powers, violence), but the development of the story is not nearly as compelling as his later 2 works- The Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth (two of my favorite movies). At times Cronos feels like a TV drama (parly due to the soundtrack) and lacks the depth, complexity and nuanbce of the other films he has both written and directed.This film is the training ground for what has become one of the great movie makers in recent history. a sad, dramatic film, with elements of horror
If your wanting a big Hollywood type production with lavish effects, and lots of gore, this might not be the film for you. It was filmed in Mexico, and the dialog is a mix of spanish and english. It is one of the earliest films by director Guillermo Del Toro, who's career took off after this movie. It is a sad story about the relationship between a grandfather and his grand daughter. The grandfather loves the grand daughter who he and his wife raise, and wishes he could be around longer to look after her. He is an antique dealer who owns a shop and one day finds a mysterious brass beetle like device called The Cronos in the base of a statue. Next we get to see what happens when a basically good and kind person (grand father), is faced with the prospect of immortality. It is beautifully ... I've tried not to divulge too much of the story line because I feel it will detract from the experiece of this film, which I truly love. If your a person that loves classic horror stories with strong characters and not a lot of gore, I really recomend this film. Even though the DVD is getting a bit pricey now that it's out of print, you won't be sad for spending the extra dollars.

Cronos --Horror AAAA++++
A definite must have for horror movie collectors. Unexpected and entertaining twists. Actors are awesome in this movie. Well-scripted and great storyline.
