Nicholas Cage stars in this dramatic comedy from director Gore Verbinski (PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL), once again playing a handsome bachelor in a post mid-life crisis (ADAPTATION, THE FAMILY MAN, MATCHSTICK MEN). The son of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Robert Spritz (Michael Caine), David Spritz (Cage) is a successful Chicago weatherman who for reasons beyond his understanding, frequently gets fast-food thrown at him on the street. Could the reason for this be that David's job, though lucrative, requires little exertion, allowing him to occupy what even he admits is a relatively easy existence? Living in the shadow of his father's greatness, and in the wake of a recent marital separation, David messily struggles to impress his father, reconnect to his estranged wife (Hope Davis), and save his troubled kids (Gemmenne de la Peńa, Nicholas Hoult), all while trying to land a coveted job in New York. David's efforts to reach and protect his kids feel realistic in that they are heartfelt, but not always successful. Likewise, David's marriage contains tangible flaws that reveal themselves in interesting ways. THE WEATHER MAN contains just as much sadness as it does comedy, and does a good job of finding one in the other. Some of the film's most heartbreaking scenes are also the funniest, the best example of this being when David learns that his daughter is being called "Camel-toe" at school. Each time Cage's clueless and vulnerable David gets hit with a burrito, milk shake, or McDonald's apple pie, we genuinely feel for the guy. Through increasingly insightful voiceovers, viewers are taken on David's journey from the lazy desire for things to be easy to the hard realization that things never are, and as David's wise father says early on in the film: life without struggle is meaningless.

Cage and the Weather
Nobody does comic existential angst like Nicolas Cage, who gets a good workout in The Weather Man, an underrated slice of quiet desperation. Cage plays David Spritz, a Chicago TV meteorologist who knows only too well the constant uncertainty of predicting the weather. Despite a possible offer from a network morning show, David's life is a mess: he's estranged from his kids and irritated wife (Hope Davis), he's perpetually at odds with his remote father (Michael Caine), and lately people on the street have had the disconcerting habit of throwing food at him. Director Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean) has perhaps too heavy a touch for this kind of comic melancholy, but screenwriter Steven Conrad has an interesting, almost Mamet-like ear for "written" dialogue--Cage has a few ... It's possible that we've seen Cage in this kind of character one too many times, but he's still good at it, and his doleful face and pasted-on smile fit the mood of the picture. Unlike the heroes of most Hollywood movies, David Spritz doesn't always--or often--do the right thing, but Cage makes you want to see the poor sap make it. Popular Chicago weatherman Dave Spritz (Nicolas Cage) has a shot at the big time when a national morning television show calls him for an audition. Professionally, Dave is on top of the world, but his personal life is in complete disarray. The harder he tries to hold on, the more he loses his grip. His painful divorce, his Pulitzer Prize-winning dad's (Michael Caine) illness, and trouble with his kids have Dave poised on the knife's edge between stability and calamity. Trying to gain control of his situation, Dave slowly comes to realize that life, much like the weather, is completely unpredictable.

Why, Michael Caine, why?
Wow. This movie is advertised as being somewhere between American Beauty and About Schimdt. Unfortunately, it was directed by Gore Verbinski and according to Ask A Ninja, Verbinski is German for "bad dialogue." It's very true in this film. They clearly had a lot of good ideas. Things to make it a great movie. It becomes a movie where you just kind of pity Nicholas Cage's character, Dave Spritz. He is mocked by the populous at large and has fast food thrown at him. He seeks a lot of contemplation on this matter as well as his life as a whole but he doesn't reach very many conclusions. He doesn't come to a point. One thought that becomes concrete in his mind is that he IS fast food since so many people want to throw it at him. He becomes obsessed with the idea that if he buckles ... Wow. Instead he louses it up more often than not. By the end of the movie, he still hasn't won back his wife and she is determined to marry someone else. He kind of bonds with his daughter by buying her clothes she won't get made fun of in school for and protects his son by beating up a child molester. He accepts a new job with a higher salary at Hello America for 1.2 million a year. I'm not sure if he's even happy at the end of the movie even though his career and children are kind of straightened out. I feel bad for Michael Caine. He's great in all his scenes, but isn't given a lot of great things to say. It's hilarious when he uses the phrase, "camel toe" but he ends up making Nicholas Cage look ridiculously inadequate as an actor sitting next to him. They probably reached a little too high with that casting call. I was saddened when his big line of advice to his son ended up being something like, "In this shit life, sometimes you have to chuck things." Wow. I'm so moved right now. I can't even get MY thoughts completely straightened out after watching this. My head hurts. We didn't resolve a whole heck of a lot. The character Dave Spritz drops F-bombs everywhere when he can't think of anything smart to say and just succeeds in looking like that much more of a jerk. I understand where we're going with the whole, "Easy doesn't enter into grown-up life" and that you're never going to have it perfect and completely figured out. But this character was a whiny child for a great deal of the film and so you don't sympathize with him very much. I give this movie a B- for the funny moments it had. I'm being generous.

David is divorced and struggles to be a meaningful part of his children's lives as his wife introduces her fiance into the picture. His father(Michael Caine) hopes for more from him and is often his adviser. He is really disappointed in his life and fed up, his only outlet is archery and scaring the people hitting him with fast food. As it is David works hard to make changes to bring happiness into the life of his family. This movie takes a close look at how hard it can be to have a meaningful life in the fast lane. Angst in Chicago
"The Weather Man" should be retitled to "Angst in Chicago" or "How Many Pained Facial Expressions can Nicolas Cage Make?" ::sigh:: I was in hopes this would be a good film but it was just to painful to watch a couple of good actors wasted in this rubbish. Nicolas Cage plays a weatherman in Chicago but he isn't really trained for it and doesn't like his job. He's lost his marriage (to Hope Davis) and has unrealistic expectations that it can be made right again. His two young teenage children are seriously messed up. He's a vast disappointment to his father (Michael Caine). He is regularly pelted with fast food as he walks down the street, He's in serious need of anger management therapy, He's chronically depressed and at a loss as to what he can do to make himself and those around ... Nicolas Cage's Acting...5 Stars...Movie...1 Star
It may be the fact that I had already been disappointed by several slow movies the week that I watched Weather Man, but I was left wondering....why did anyone ever want to make a movie about a weather man? What was the purpose of this movie? The screenplay writer must have had a messed up childhood and a vendetta against weather men (maybe he lived in Chicago where sun, snow, and rain are predicted all in the same day...) because this film should never have been filmed. Nicolas Cage is always a good actor and made many parts of the movie entertaining but the movie as a whole was 2 Thumbs Down.It may be the fact that I had already been disappointed by several slow movies the week that I watched Weather Man, but I was left wondering....why did anyone ever want to make a movie about a weather man?
